You're thinking through this backwards, my man.
| Quote: | | It is just confusing to me why there is a node on the side when it is supposed to reject side noise. |
You are correct, on paper, but not in your thought process.
It does reject noise from the side (360 degrees, at that).
The node is the area of rejection.
The bump in the back is a smaller area where the mic will also pick up signal. |

.03 cent minute.........
Its this rear pickup area on the headset mic that is causing you this problem and placement of the wedge will be your most critical task as well as constantly repeating Ben's mantra. This is not a problem a simple EQ can fix.
It is the physics of the surrounding area vs. the voice and its range. vs. the volume needed (drums are loud right above em......DUH) vs. the polar pattern of the mic and its ability to capture sound returning to it from the front.
A limiter is your next option. The 286 has something that wasnt really mentioned and thats it will achieve a higher clean gain than the pres on your board at a lower noise floor....with limiting , as our 'lovers earlier stated, as well as a decent EQ section, it is a cheap and quick way to achieve your goal ....as well as adhereing to the the mantras you have learned about here. |

Ok, I think I figured out what the side node does now. It hears for the surrounding noises and introduces a phase canceling signal into the overall signal.
Thanks for telling me about the bump in the back, I guess thats where it gets it's "Super" pattern from.
I just had an opportunity to play with the Sennheiser unit and it was at +18 Db on the gain. OH OH.
I tested the snake out and it all of it works great too!
When I plugged it in it was super hot and feeding like crazy. I cannot believe they let it go on so long like that! I had it pretty hot (good, no feedback with the gain at 0 Db on the transmitter and -10 Db on the AF out on the receiving unit with the gain at about half on the yammi board.
Well problem solved for now, at least I am pretty sure. I am gonna add some chorus and reverb to her tomorrow tonight as well. They never did that before either. I am sure that will add some fun to my first live night!
I still need to squeeze her dynamic range down so a limiter might still be desired. |
