My quick list:
"When the Levee Breaks" Led Zeppelin.
"Synchronicity", "Ghost in the Machine" (entire albums) The Police.
"Roseland NYC" Portishead.
"Drive" REM.
"Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover" Paul Simon.

Cool

Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior (entire album)

Unfortunately, that's the only one I can name. Most of the drum sounds I really like I hear on the local non-profit radio during jazz weekend, and I don't catch their names. My favorite sound is that natural and unhyped sound that jazz is famous for.

Oh, I did think of another one I like:

Mannheim Steamroller - Tocatta (from Fresh Aire III)

That's about all I can think of for now.

Lots of Zep.
Early Beatles "Hard Day's Night" "Help" "With the Beatles"
Lots of the old Krupa and Rich type big band stuff.

There's just something about the sound of drums recorded with room and air and life to them that I like more than the close tight sound.
I guess it depends on the music, as that tight sound really works as well.

I just love the sound of those old big band recordings, early Beatles, Zep, Stones, they really rock. There is something to be said about recording the power of a whole band, or at least a whole drumset, as opposed to recording a drum from 1 inch away.

On the other hand Stewart Copeland's tight little drum sounds really work for his style, and the sound of the Police. Love his playing.

Cheers!

PLEASE tell me you are kidding? I do have to admit, I like Alex's Snare sound, but his kick is ALWAYS so whimpy, and his toms on 1984 sound like Simmons crap! I am still so confused at VH's unusually "thin" low-end productions! No subs needed - EVER! (Maybe on OU812 for the low-frequency Keyboard pads, but THAT's IT!)

I like all kinds of drum sounds from the "Over Processed In Your Face Punch You In The Gut" sound, to the "Jazz" room sound.

I have REALLY been digging Medeski, Martin & Wood the past year or so. Their progression is really interesting, from more of a classical "Jazz" sound on "Its A Jungle In Here", to a funky/dirty/overly-warm analog niceness in more recent releases ("Combustication", etc). VERY, VERY nice drums there and a stellar player.

For an electronic drummer, Bela Fleck's drumatar, "Future Man" gets some pretty good sounds, and makes them believable. He has a bit of "machine gunning" on the fast snare rolls, but otherwise, very natural sounding elcectrics. Not to mention, he plays things no kit player ever could!

Later Cool

Cheap Trick - Dream Police

ELP - Trilogy

Steely Dan - Aja (HA! Spelled it right that time!)

Yes - The Yes Album

Tom Petty: Wildflowers

Jellyfish: "Ghost at Number One" (and the rest of Spilt Milk)

Beck: Sea Change

Led Zep: "When the Levee Breaks" (of course)

Fiona Apple: "Limp" (Jon Brion prod. with Matt Chamberlin on drums - really one of the best drum records in a decade).

I'm probably leaving out some, but those are always near the top of my list.

Vanessa Carleton's "A Thousand Miles" is pretty fat! Abe Laboriel Jr gets some INCREDIBLE sounds out of his kits. Man, that bass drum!

Another Fiona Apple: "Fast As You Can"

Most 311 has tight 'n poppy drum sounds

Again mentioning Medeski, Martin & Wood (Any album) - as one mention is just NOT enough

Some of the Tribal Tech stuff - "Face First"

Anything Dennis Chambers plays on

Smashing Pumpkins "Gish" and "Siamese Dream"

Morphine "Cure For Pain" (Very nice)

Shall I go on? Cool

I will have to mention Bill Bruford. (I know The Yes Album was mentioned, as Bruford was the drummer) Any of his solo albums are a treat- not to mention his albums with YES, UK, King Krimson, etc. You can hear his trademark sounds from two rooms away!
