ever have one of those nights where everything sounds great no matter what? when all you have to do is turn up everything. barely need to touch the eq, the delay already sounds money, and the reverb isnt too high-endy?

i'm riding high on one of those from last night..

Cool

Good, someone enjoys what they do.

Now, if you want to stay on your high, don't read on.

"ever have one of those nights where everything sounds great no matter what?"
Nope.
<rant>
Rehearsals are meaningless because no-one is more than half-assed about it; the equipment and the whole goddamn system is infested with hiss and RFI and the monitors are too quiet and the mics are crap and need EQing to hell to make them sound useful, the pres are up to 15dB short, the connections are unbalanced and the drummer actually managed last week to outdo 2 x 400W speakers which were rapidly approaching a level of feedback...coming from the back wall of the 20m long building.
Either that or the cymbal was just, as usual, sounding like feedback.

But that was with half the band missing, and anyway I'm a perfectionist. The band is just a bunch of musically competent people from the Church and the whole system must've cost about $3500 to put together.

However, there are times when everything goes well enough to call it good. Somehow we pull together for concerts.

I had a good one last night: Son Of Dave was actually quite hard to mix, but I was happy with the results and so was he. And I thoroughly enjoyed his set.

Back down to earth tonight with crappy hip-hop unfortunately.

Friday was pretty good for me. I wasn't expecting the gig (I checked the clubs website and it was a band I had never mixed so I figured they brought in their own soundman) so it was a surprise when I got the call. I went and checked the bands site to see what they had and it was a massive set up - but the guitar player was one of the teachers from the school I attended. It was fun to finally work for someone from school. Only 18 years after attending and working sound constantly since. The musicians were all good and the night went really well. It was nice to mix something a little outside the norm as well (seems like it's all the same through the clubs I work lately - different bands with all about 75% the same songs).
