I was just randomly thinking before of examples of when low tech recordings turn to gold. Constantly every day I hear music from the radio or T.V which is just produced, not performed. I can list endless amounts of it. The entire Brittany Spears catalog... Pop music in general.
Anyways I'm babbling, the point of this thread is examples of talent over tech.

Would a million dollar studio make this any more special. I doubt it.
If you know of any rough diamonds like this, any genre. Link me up.
/Kinda like Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock. A recording of that from a mobile phone would still beat anything I heard on Nova radio today. |

Ok, now I don't want to hear from anyone again that my intros are too long, and that I don't get to the chorus within 30 seconds.
those were 2 extreme examples of artistry over production. How 'bout something a little more subtle...

Lo-Fi?
I don't know. It was probably done on a SSL console in a half-million dollar room at $200 an hour. I takes a lot to make it sound like it was done on a J.C.Pe#ny boombox in the bathroom.
Great thing about the Archers...
Their albums sounded just like they did live in a small club. Plus you had to work at it to figure out what the lyrics meant.
Yo Lo Tengo... I vaguely remember seeing them at Stache's in Columbus, OH. of course I vaguely remember seeing a lot of mid-ninety's bands at Stache's in columbus, OH. In fact, I vaguely remember being able to see Stache's in the mid-ninety's. Well, really, I vaguely remember the mid-ninety's... |

I just got out of bed (4pm), having trouble remembering writing the initial post so that may leave clues to my current state.
Wow Dump really has found the sound there. Same with the Archers. I'm enjoying this, though never really been a big indie fan... In So Long, almost exactly at the point where I was leaning for the mouse to skip forward the band changed up and off again they went. Totally enjoyed Toast by the Archers. It's as if the band just want to jamb and the singer just needs a few words about his breakfast to make everything ok.
I have to bail for practice, will be definitely sharing these new tunes with the band.
Cheers guys, if I find more goodness where I see talent shining through adverse tape decks I'll post up. |
