"Final Daze"

There's an acoustic guitar opening to this that goes on w/ no other accompaniment for a while ... save percussion.

The full arrangement finally kicks in at the first chorus.

My question is fairly simple and direct: Does the "guitar/drums/vocal alone", the sparseness, IYO carry the piece sufficiently to the point where things start to get going?

Those drums sound great, brother. Perfect blend of roominess and fidelity. They have a quality about them that's very unique.

Would you mind elaborating on your setup? Mics, gear, technique, room size -- anything worth mentioning.

Hi Patrick!

All the work I do is w/ musicians over the internet --
I collect drums from Florida, bass from the Netherlands, guitars from Canada etc ...

It's a worldwide effort.

As I said in my "Free Albums" thread, I learned how to record via Recording.org, but then wandered off for a bit because internet collaboration caught my fancy.

Accordingly, I met a bunch of fellow recordists who happen to be incredible musicians, and we put these things together online. I build the frame, send it out, collect back, then mix the contributions in my central home studio.

This is actually an early rendition, with me playing most of the underlying frame here ... (I do the drums first -- it's easier to build from the foundation up w/ the rhythm in place), but I've got bass guitar and harmony vox being contributed later this weekend -- they'll replace my placeholder parts.

Which is a long way of saying, "I've no clue what Frank does."

So in response to your query, I've sent an email off to my drummer ... asking him what he uses in his tracking.

I'll jump back with the answer when he responds.

Did you feel the early segment was okay? Did it hold interest or "drag"?

I know I could learn a thing or two from your drummer.
Drum n bass for this track are great. Your vocal soloing is cool too, and the bits where you're not singing like Rolph Harris are great.
You're definitely producing some quality stuff.

The cooperative efforts idea is a great one. It's a bit of inspiration.

Musically and sonically, though--to my ears--the drums were by far the most interesting element of this piece.

I'm not familiar w/ Rolph Harris, G ... but I'm assuming you mean the chorus section?

I tell my wife that everytime I receive tracks from the folks I work with, that it's like Christmas coming through the mail. It's like opening gifts and never knowing exactly what to expect, and sometimes takes things on unanticipated tangents.

One of the prime examples of the strangeness that can occur is illustrated on "Sooner or Later" off of "Retrospectful" (below). We went all over the place on that piece. It ended up VERY different from my original outline.

For even though I provide the general frame build ... basic rhythm and arrangement parts, I tell everyone ... "My example is the loose direction I'm going in, but you don't necessarily need follow. Pleasantly surprise me."

... and they almost unfailingly do. I can't say I use every part sent all the time, but usually w/ some judicious editing, I can get something useful out of most contributions.

It's a LOT of fun.
