Do you guys find that most people (whether it be in the studio or on stage) prefer just a normal mix sent to them or a custom mix, per person?
As a drummer, when I'm on stage, I want a very custom mix (bass, lead guitar, keyboard, lead singer, and a mix of my drums). We have multiple singers, organ, rhythm guitar, etc...
On our stage, pretty much every monitor mix is different, but I wasn't sure if that was normal for in the studio, as well, or if we're just wacky.

I've been in the studios since the 1960s. In the beginning there was God.
Then we had a single mix for everybody in the studio with headphones.
10 years later, we could provide headphones with either a stereo mix or 2 separate mono mixes and/or fold back to the studio speakers.
10 years later, people can't seem to manage without having individual mixes.
I guess the human hearing apparatus has changed over 30 years??
And so your problem is?? You can't hear what you're doing? You've never listened carefully. How can everybody before you manage? Think about that. Now listen carefully.
Still listening carefully

We have 2 monitors which (move around a bit but currently) sit at the front of the stage, pointing at the vocalists feet :S but noone complains (except when one stops working).
They're rigged up in "stereo" to allow for more of X going Left than Right, I could probably slap them onto one monitor channel and no-one would notice the difference.
Custom mixes? Meh. |
