Hello everyone. I have a quick question about latency that I’m hoping you guys can help me out with.

I currently use Sonar 7 Producer Edition on a Windows XP Professional OS. My computer has quad-core processing and 4 gigs of ram. But since I’m using XP and not Vista, I can only use 3.25 gigs of the 4 gigs possible.

Anyway, now that you know what my audio recording hardware and software specs are, here’s my problem:

I use a Yamaha PSR 273 MIDI keyboard. It’s not a controller but has the option to act like one. When I connect it to my Presonus FP10 interface via MIDI cable, I experience some latency when recording live piano tracks through the interface.

I have no idea why I even have this problem since my computer is very capable of handling audio recording technology. Please help me out with this because I am so confused and the latency problem is really bugging the hell out of me. And if you would like to know some more details about the settings I’m recording on then please let me know.

I want to get this mystery solved once and for all and I look forward to your replies. Take care.

Peace.

Latency of how long? Anything above about 100ms I'd worry about, less than that, well...

Unless you have hardware monitoring (which is basically splitting the input to the output) you ALWAYS have latency.

Buffer settings, the amount of tracks being processed and the complexity of the processing dictate how much, though.

Also, should be 3.98GB and not 3.25 going on what I've heard before.

The latency I'm experiencing is really weird. For example, when I push the key on the keyboard, I hear the actual sound about a split second later. It really throws me off when I'm playing and I shouldn't be experiencing this at all. Any ideas?

The split second of latency, is probably being caused by the time it takes the computer to gather the input from the key, turn it into a sound, and then output that sound after any processing you might be doing.

The fastest computer in the world won't get rid of the split second delay (but it will make it unnoticably small).

Is there any way to monitor via headphones straight from the keyboard, while recording?

Are you using the correct driver in your recording software? Im assuming you are using the FP10 to connect your midi. If this is the case you have to use the FP10 driver in your recording software. If the keyboard is say usb, it may try to use the default driver instead of the keyboard driver and you may need to switch between drivers in your control pannel. I had a similar problem with the FP10 and cubase before I read the manual. I was new to cubase and was sure that it would just work right after I plugged it all in.

I try to do just about everything before I read the manual. 50% of the time I have to go back and read it until I figure out what I did wrong. Someday maybe I'll start with the manual and then maybe it will work right........

I doubt it though.
