This may be a dumb question, but I really dont know the answer.

I have a Presonus FireStudio 26x26 and my friend has an Alesis io|26

They both have ADAT's, so can I link the two together so I can have more then 8 XLR's?

It will work if 1) one of the devices functions in a "stand alone mode" and 2) both devices are selectable as far as clock master/slave.

Yes. You have to set up the FireStudio internal output routing so that the 8 mic (XLR) inputs are patched to ADAT 1 output. You cannot patch anything to ADAT2 output. Connect ADAT 1 output of the FireStudio to the ADAT 1 input on the Alesis IO|26. Set the clock source for the IO|26 to be ADAT 1. This should give you 16 mic (XLR) channels at 44.1 or 48KHz into the computer via the IO|26. Don't try to use the FireStudio firewire input at the same time.
