Default Adventures Of Game Music Making !!

Just off the beaten path and to give you guys some giggles, I think we all need some laughter these days... I recently got contracted to work on a new game that hopefully(so I can get paid) is coming out shortly(sorry, not allowed to say much about it until they do :( ) and it's really funny how with game companies there are wildy different ways of working: Some are very specific with their requests and needs and ask for things like a "Multimedia Design Document", yet others will simply say silly things like "the music is too happy for him, make it sadder or less chippy", or "it's not nintendo sounding enough, just too musicy" !!! In this project I'm doing music and all sound fxs for a video arcade action game with comic book type characters. I just got the first Images to work from this week and working on some main themes for them.
Here is our First Main Hero:
:D :D They do have a method to their madness I guess, I just haven't figured it out yet.... Good night, have a laugh, my treat ! Peace everyone...
    Cheers, StephenR :^)

This type of production I can assist on. I had to do not only some VO for the X-men but I actually has creative control of the music bed.

I hear sounds for both characters and have not downloaded yours yet.

I think I will refrain from hearing yours until I have an oppurtunity to show you mine..intersting what the differences shall be. You have my trust in this.

Also, once we can compare, I have an algorithum that is better suited for games other then the reg. standard for the indutry. Some gaming is using 24 bit 96K in quad now so do not sell short to the 8 bit or 12 bit schemes. This algorithum saves space (ROM) and gives gamers 4 channel, 5 or even 7 channel sound./

I am studing it as we speak...but got to bed down tonight as it is 11PM of hell week for me.

Yeppers, sure looks like him(MegaMan) GentleG !! To their credit though, these guys are really talented and fun to work with, some game developers are real arses and have no love for music or the talent required ! I've worked with these guys before and they are really laid back and funny ! Anyway, here are more sketches, as I get more music going I'll post along each character.... I wish I could do that with the other stuff, but I have some serious non-disclosure contracts with them which bind me to secrecy until the game is actually published (IF that ever happens, half of the time it does not, which reminds me: make sure you get some advance pay, they all promise you great royalties, but only half of the games even see the light of day...)

    Hi Bill;

Typically in most cases, the game developers are more concerned with memory and storage limitations rather than sound quality. Many games are sold online and have strict limits on how big the download can be, so full hi-fi wave files are out of the question. On effects and voices I normally record 1.5 to 2 seconds, PCM,25khz, 8 Bit, Mono - which gives me a VERY small footprint yet adecuate quality. On the music it varies widely; Some games will use only General Midi files and let the soundcard produce the actual sounds, but the newer game engines allow for MP3 files to be used which works good for me, so I dither a lot of the music waves to MP3 files at 44khz, 128bit - roughly 1 meg per minute in size. Anything beyond those resolutions for music and fxs, would create files too big for the average game.

    :s: Oops !!!

I was told to at least include copyrights although these sketches have been released previously:
Drawings copyright (c) 2003 by Stardust Digital Entertainment,
Songs copyright (c) 2003 by BlueFish Music

Here are some original songs for the game, keep in mind this is not an EQ rpg type game, the music is more techno/electronica because most of the action happens in future/space... Check character images above to match with song:

    Main Hero Theme: http://www.azurecrystal.com/music/ga...MainTheme1.mp3

    King Sluggy Boss song: http://www.azurecrystal.com/music/ga..._dir/Boss1.mp3

There will be basically three or four laboratory level themes:
    Lab Theme 1: http://www.azurecrystal.com/music/ga...tory_level.mp3

    Lab Theme 2: http://www.azurecrystal.com/music/ga...ab_Level_2.mp3

    Lab Theme 3: http://www.azurecrystal.com/music/ga...ab_level_3.mp3

Let me know if you have any questions regarding writing game music, I was also thinking of possibly posting a "game music" topic as an article with a lot of info ! This type of music music tends to be a little repetitive since they have to loop these at different points, when the player dies, end of level, etc... so bear with me, not the usual stuff here.... I can tell you there is not a lot of money for this field, but it is an outlet for your music and if a game goes national, a nice feather in your hat. The RPG games really give you more space to explore better compositions and more orchestral stuff...

I'm new to the boards as of today and was just browsing around. This music brings me back to the days of megaman and legend of zelda lol. I spend the better part of my childhood a video game freak. Really liked the Main theme track. I didn't like the slug one at first with that bass, and snare's just didn't sound right to me but then it change and all worked out. I haven't played games in almost a year after getting into music. Good stuff though. May I ask how you got the job to do the music for this game? Did you appy or did they come to you? Btw a game music topic sounds good to me. I wouldnt mind knowing as much as I can for when I get to that point.

Hi BlackTalon; Yeah, I hear you about the slug song, keep in mind these are just rough mixes and have a l-o-n-g way to go before they make it anywhere... I got an email from the producer of the game who was listening to my MP3 music:
( http://www.mp3.com/azurecrystal ) and asked me if I was interested in doing music and sound fxs for an upcoming cell animation game. The other jobs I did a lot of posting in different game developers forums offering my services. I agree, I'm going to ask the bigs guys here if they would like me to moderate a "Game Music" forum, I bet we would get a lot of traffic !! thanks for listening, I'm glad this was of interest for you....

Azure: Have you ever heard of Ragnarok Online? Its an MMORPG, and the download has the entire soundtrack in MP3 format - all the tracks are either 96 or 80kbps, and you wouldn't be able to tell it unless you either heard the original tracks, or manually checked out the bitrate. - I know I thought they were at least 128!

My point: It's all in the encoder used - Personally, if I were to ever attempt a soundtrack that would be distributed online, I'd go for VBR - that's *THE* ultimate balance between quality and space needed, for a marginal increase in CPU usage for decoding.

Best encoder for MP3 would be LAME, (more info found here) You could also look into the newer formats, like OGG (personally wouldn't recommend this) or the (relatively) new MPC format - Superior quality for smaller filesize.

Sorry if I'm repeating information you already know. ;P

BTW, I'm also a huge fan of video gaming music. I'd be very interested in whatever discussions you start on video game music production, composition, etc.

Oooh, BTW, I know its nitpicking and probably redundant, but whoever's in charge might like to know that the Mouth2 entry on the Boundemouth picture should read "255, 157, 157" :)

Looks like its going to be one interesting game.
