Influences?

Anything Dave Weckl ever recorded.
Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater, is the best rock drummer in the past 15 years.
And Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews is the best "feel/groove" player around today!

Just my thoughts!

If I could get the foot timing of John Bonham, the kick drum "pop" of Lars Ulrich, the cymbal/hat work of Tony Williams or Bernard Purdie, the crazy syncopated tom fills of Keith Moon, and the snare sound of Mitch Mitchell/Stewart Copeland, I would be complete.

and too many others to mention.

BTW Mahavishnu Orchestra was Billy Cobham (i saw them live in 72 DAMM )

Bill Ward is very underrated. Like him.

There's a band called Hey Mercedes. (an older variation of it was called Braid) It's an evolution of Punk, Hardcore but it's filled with riffs not three chord stuff. Their drummer makes me want to quit.

I agree with a lot of the guys here, but I'll add a few lesser knowns:

Damon Che from Don Caballero. A very Neil Peart-influenced style, but this guy can get really out there, and the rest of the band is great as well. If you haven't heard this band yet, you should check it out - especially if you're into early prog stuff like King Crimson and Rush.

Sebastian Thomson of Trans Am (and many more). This guy isn't quite the octopus that Damon Che is, but he's totally rock solid and extremely creative with his drumming. Inspirational.

I'm AMAZED and slightly disgusted that no one mentioned any of the following AMAZING drummers!! But I see that Stewart Copeland got mentioned WAY too many times. He couldn't carry Earl Palmer's stick bag as far as I'm concerned. Listen to Little Richard's "Slippin' and Slidin'" and tell me who can groove like that!! Stewart Copeland would be fiddlin' with his little splash cymbal with his little tip tappin'! By the way no grown man should have a splash cymbal, they're for little girls.

can't remember anyone else...
saw Collins twice live...I really like the snap of his drumming on all his studio work.
and I grew up on Journey...I learned my first bits of odd meter beats from Frontiers and his straight forward beats just flow/float...haven't heard any of his jazz stuff...never see it in any music stores, unfortunately.

Clyde Stubblefield with James Brown!

He lives in Madison WI (actually recently suffering from serious illness- living w/out insurance!)
Had a chance to work with him for a few gigs 15 years ago or so in a jazz and R&B setting. There is no one who can split the back of your head w/ a Funk backbeat better than Clyde and he could play in any style.

Rimshot mentioned Al Miller. Wow! I didn't think anyone else knew about him. I used to go with my drummer to his lessons with Al back in the late 60's. My brother also started to take lessons from him. Great big band drummer! Is he still alive?

Yeah he was a GREAT big band drummer. I studied with him from 1962-1970. Unfortunately Al passed away a couple of years ago. His son: Matt has been doing well and was the touring drummer for Blood, Sweat and Tears as well as an active studio drummer.

BTW on the first page in my post, I mentioned both Art Blakey and Philly Jo Jones (although I forgot to mention Max Roach, Tony Williams and Elvin Jones, all great influences.) Another drummer that I listen to a lot is Jack de Johnette (who seems very appropriate to mention now, especially for this forum. He is an awesome drummer and a classically trained fine keyboard player too.)
