Became a Red Sox fan [which is spelled L-O-S-E-R], and a gear pimp. So, now I pick and choose my recording gigs mostly by how much fun I think they'll be, and pimp gear by day. I mostly work on "alternative country" these days, which at one time was known as 'rock and roll', but now is considered 'country music with no autotuning'...you can see why I live just outside of Boston...it's a country music mecca to say the least.Yeah, it's the short version...but I'm kind of a boring guy. Besides (mmmmm...beer), I know my story, but I haven't heard most of yours yet....soooooooo, belly up to the bar, order a drink, tell us who you are, etc.Anybody gotta buck for the jukebox? TARGET=_blank>http://www.recording.org/ubb/smile.gif.</A> I am a musician first, graduate of McGill, a composer that learned to engineer from modest cassette all the way up to DAW's, and thirdly, a producer as chosen by his peers (musicians). 11 years out of university, and a child and mortgage later, I own a project based recording studio, and will be patnering with a larger facility to build a larger, more capable production house North of the 60th parallel. I have a few production credits, some film scoring, live sound and event productions, and a lot of brass playing on a variety of records. Hey all! Grab me a Killian's, will ya? It would seem as though I am the youngin' of the group here! My name's Chris and I am of the "ripe old age" of 21. I've lived in MD all my life and currently live outside of Bel Air in Harford County. I am primarily into rock music, but not the crap thats mostly on the radio. I dig a lot of progressive metal and rock. Stuff like Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, Magnitude 9, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani. I also like the classics... Zep, Zappa, Sabbath, etc... I like some of that radio stuff, but to me it lacks what's that word.... hmmm.... oh yeah, talent! You can't tell me that a guy who can play 3 chords and whines can compare to bands like Yes or Dream Theater. NO comparison! I also like jazz and blues and even some of the poppier(?) stuff. (not my ususal listening style, but I enjoy working on/with it). I've been playing guitar for about 8 years or so now and have been in bands for the past 6. I currently am attending the Sheffield Institute for the recording arts to help hone my skills (mostly for the experience on higher end gear) and for some industry contacts. I read about audio stuff constantly and have been recording stuff for several years now. I feel I have an excellent handle on it (particuarly considering my age!), I just lack the real world experience that lets people know I know what I'm doing (I swear I do!). If anybody has any advice for someone trying to at least make a living in the engineering (and producing) field, please send the info my way. Music is my passion and I'm going to end up working with it in one way or another, so any help is appreciated! I have also recently become fascinated with audio for video post production. If you ever see me post anything (questions or otherwise) please feel free to get as technical as you want. You might be surprised at how well I can keep up! Don't let my age fool you! (don't take that the wrong way... I don't think I'm some super-genius or something... I just happen to pick this sort of thing up VERY quickly and have been doing so long enough to understand what's going on)But ANYWAY..... Alright, give me a damn Coors Light”I thought I was gonna take honors for being the youngest guy on the block, but it looks like Chris has me beat. Damn! When I was a kid, I told my mom I wanted a practice pad to work on drum rudiments. “Sure, no problem.” After I got tired of that (I was only like 10 or 12), I decided I needed a drum kit. She gave me a clarinet… go figure. I was also interested in sax and she told me if I got good with the clarinet, I could get a sax. I can’t really complain… after a couple years of experience playing bass clarinet in a concert setting, and sax in jazz bands, I got a music scholarship to LSU. Did Symphony thing there and LSU Marching Band. Man, the hell with fraternities. College band guys know how to drink…I made some friends I’ll never forget! During that time, I had started playing guitar. By the time I graduated college with a bachelors in Public Relations and Mass Media (I found out I could keep my scholarship w/out majoring in music), I had been performing in a number of different groups, done some recording and started playing bass. I also got really interested in live sound (what a moron, yes I know). Anyway, I didn’t want to work for someone else, so I took out a big ass loan and took a chance. (I had already learned enough to get by at this point from the studio and just being around the block a bit)Anyway, when word got around that I was doing a great job for a lot less money than the other guys (who had big corporate payrolls), business started picking up. I decided to incorporate the business (major pain in the ass) and set up a web site. At some point, in designing the site, I got extremely into the net, realizing I could help people avoid all the mistakes I have been through. So I set up a website just for musicians… <A HREF="http://www.just-for-musicians.com/" TARGET=_blank>http://www.just-for-musicians.com/</A> Boy… fighting with search engines, html, etc… I’ve learned a LOT this year! If anyone needs any help there or with marketing/publicity, give me a holler… I’ll help out any way I can. Anyway, a friend of mine, whom I used to play with is in LA now, then Germany, doing C Sound stuff for corporate crap. I’m thinking about getting into it with him when he gets back around November. Before then, I’m trying to pick up more about DAW, while I help other people out online. We have a 24 track ADAT studio here, but we’ve never really messed with digital that much. My roommate’s band, Spank the Monkey (boy they really will name bands anything nowadays, huh?) does like 28 dates a month sometimes. His girlfriend is about to move to Dallas for school…. Which leaves me alone all day in a big house with a 24 track studio, my computer, and our two dogs. “Hey Sid… stop drinkin’ my beer! Damn dog… Sorry, gotta go!!!”PS. How-do. Shot of Jamieson's and a soothing lo-cal Steam Whistle, if you please. Thought I'd drop by and say hello, get a feel for the place. Hope I'm posting correctly as I'm not finding the interface too damned intuitive. Regardless, abt me: Spent abt 20 years on tour, some names, some not. Done a lot of theatrical work. Haven't mixed in years as god didn't give me golden ears, she cursed me with a big mouth. And, as I'm not really qualified to do anything except get things done, I sell live production services; "sales weasel" in Fletcher-speak (I use that, and thank you Fletcher). Last gig was putting together the audio package for the Toronto production of The Lion King. Looking forward to lurking, learning, and leering at the dames. See ya' 'round the campus. I'll be on the corner of the bar, reading the trades and chipping in where I can.

My first time here, I was just having a beer myself at the bar in my studio...
I would like to invite you all to have a drink with me...
We have over 150 imported beers in stock!
I'm sippin a Corsendunk which is on tap this week!
My studio is located in upstate NY,90 miles north of Manhattan, not much open after we get done with a session, so I had to build my own pub...
Now I have no reason to leave the studio ever!

Time to belly up. I'll have a Guiness and a shot of Laphroig while waiting for the head to settle. How much is a bowl of popcorn around here?Bass player since I was 14 (34 now), recording since I found out I could record left and right seperatly on my parents reel to reel. At 17, I was master of the 4 track cassette and collecting gear while my friends were blowing there paychecks on blow. Played in a bunch of bands. Left foggy San Francisco for rainy Seattle, toured as a soundman, worked sound in clubs, recorded myself and others on the 4 track, played in a bunch of bands. Moved to Boston in 89, went to the well known music factory there as a bass player/songwriter, spent as much time in the studios as possible. Started a band, played shows on the East Coast, almost "made it," but didn't.
Moved back to SF in 94, did the musician for hire bit, and put together a studio based around a couple of adats and a Mackie board so I could record my own album.Friends wanted me to record them, their friends wanted recordings, and my project studio started making $. I kept investing it in more gear. Did some music for some children CDRoms, Apple, and whoever had money.Damn it takes them a long time to pour a Guiness.Now I have a bunch of toys, have made a slew of CDs, and wonder about my financial future.Got Guiness?

Well, Chris may have beaten me, unless he had a birthday since then... you 22 yet, Chris, hmm? At least we can get in the bar, right? Although I'm a first time poster on RO, I lurked on RAP for many moons.. my story, as it has panned out as of late is as follows:
I go to school at the University of Kentucky for Electrical Eng. and work part time at the college radio station, at a live sound&lighting company, and believe it or not at a dance studio, instead of a music studio(how ironic?).
I was working as the Audio Technician at the local minor league baseball stadium until I got a job at a Dance studio... I quit the baseball gig in hopes of meeting a(some) hot girl(s), but to no avail... so far.

Ok, so here I am after progressing myself through mixing, recording, running FOH/monitors, attempting at producing, and trying desperately to finish school in the next 2 years since I've been here 4 already. Oh, I also played the drums, dabbled with bass and guitar, and even attempted at luthiering(ha ha!).
What I really want to do is design and production... and I've finally decided to go to The Recording Workshop during the next summer to highten my chops and hopefully get some help getting a job in a bigger city.
I have gotten an extreme amount of help from most of the contributors to this Forum and I applaude all involved yet again. Peace,EliPS: I finally bought an RNC from Mercenary and it's really nice!
