apogee converters

Hey all,

Currently running RME ad's, i have checked out the apogee stuff and i have almost made up my mind to get something along the lines of their PSX100, was wondering what most people in the USA are using as industry standard.
I have heard apogee stuff, sounds great to me.
But thats just my ears!

Hi Sammy,

Sounds like you got your mind nearly made up, which is half the battle.

I am using Lynx2 convertors. I compared these to RME and MOTU and they slayed those two. of course it is still a subtle difference, but I noticed a more open smoother high end and a bigger tighter bottom end. Worth considering seeing I reckon the would be priced well below apogee's stuff. I think from memory I paid $2500.00 or something. Dont let the whole "convertors on the card" thing put you off.

I nearly let it put me off, so glad I bothered to check! At the last minute I checked this card out and was shocked. Will do true 192 khz too. Good luck :0)

My apogee Rosetta has made a world of difference to me- I have also work with the lucid and I prfer Apogee- more clear detailed top end to my ears

Apogee is set to release a new 2 channel version of the latest Rosetta800 technology. they said sometime in March or by summer. not sure all the details, but rumor is its an A/D and D/A and possibly in the $1200-$1500usd range.?

if anything it should drive the price of the used market PSX100 (2 ch. A/D/A) down. which I'm already starting to see on Ebay for $1000.00-$1200.00 and that box was/is still quite a unit well above older Rosetta models....looks like a very good time to purchase a quality used Apogee piece?

I'm curious to know what people think of Burr Brown A/D-D/A converters? Iv'e seen them used in electonics in the pro audio market although not labeled or advertised, and in alot of mid to highend home audio. From what Iv'e read the quality is supposed to be right up there with Apogee, but I don't think you can buy a stand-alone converter. If anyone knows where to get one let me know cuz i'd like to demo it against apogee...

Also, Forgot to mention in my original post:

Where are motu in the big scheme of things,
there are not a lot of people in Australia using
motu so its hard to get an experienced opinion,
A friend of mine has the hd826 (i think thats the model number), he said it sounds as good as any apogee he has heard but costs less, i get worried whenever i hear..."its the same but it costs less"...is something missing??

Hello Sammy,

If possible try and borrow a PSX-100 and run a 24bit mix thru it, using the DIGI COPY function, and make yourself a very pleasant sounding 16bit file using UV22 dithering. That alone is worth considering buying the unit...

Not even close- I have a motu 828mkII and I got the apogee and there's no contest at all- the rosetta wins by a wide million miles... Very Happy

I never really liked the MOTU's, I've used and heard them before and they don't have a pleasent sounds, very grainy expecailly in the top end, I used to own a AD-8000, which I sold for the Rosetta 800 which is a step up from the AD-8000 which had a smooth sound, the Rosetta 800 (96k ver.) is smooth and much more deffined than the AD-8000, first reaction was much tighter lows and more top end detail that I wasn't hearing before, than for a test I threw on OK computer by Radiohead and than the difference was very apperent. Another thing that is great is the converters don't sound much better in 96k than in 44.1k, the converters sound very consistant through all of the sample rates, I've done tests with the Digi 192 I/O and the difference between 44.1 and 96k was night and day, with the rosetta its more like noon and late afternoon.

Hi, I don't think a comparison between the 828mkII and Apogee is fair. I use the MOTU HD192 and that unit actually sounds amazing. The difference between the HD series and the lower end ones is quite big. I upgraded from a 2408mkII and the difference is stunning. Big sound with a fat low end and silky top. Now I'm thinking about adding a Big Ben. A lot of people seem to think it improves the sound considerably:

Nothing bad to say about Apogee. Kinda like Chevrolet, know what I mean?

Some people looking for a little more/better/different performance might check out Larvy, Prism, Mytek, Benchmark. (among others) The new 2 channel Myteks and Benchmark units get a lot of good press. I'm running Mytek 8x96 units.
