I listened to "piss and moan". Sounds great! Every part has it's own "pocket" in the mix. It was easy to focus on and hear any part alone and the overall mix was smooth like baby skin.Man, thank you for the kind words!Piss and Moan was not done in my studio, rather a Buddys studio in Alabama. I heard the band and said...lets do it!The whole production was done on one single ADAT with a Mackey! NS10's for monitors. It took about 4 passes and it was up to steam. No kick drum mic was used!...Highs were a tad hot on that mix but the mastering (not heard on the post) took care of all the problems I heard. Remember, you really do have to push the vocals way up to get them in there.Here is the "insta link" trickGo to the actual download and right click your mouse if you are on PC. The window will pop up and select properties and left click. The atual URL will show up and shade and copy the entire URL (some of it may be hidden in the scroll) then when posting use the url button and erase the Http:// that is there and insert the new URL by hitting copy (complete with new [url=Http://)]Http://)[/url] and then click ok, then insert the name you want to use.Print this and follow it (or paste it in notepad/wordpad) so you can follow the steps and then add reply. Now right click and save as on the little red rooster link...download should commence.

Thanks for holding my hand thru the dark forest, I'll figure it out sooner or later. Right now I'm feeling a tad dence.
Great thread. I've enjoyed all songs I've checked out and my mixing bent head is spinning with ideas. Just wish I was more techno savy.

The song is "Can't Stop"It is a pop/"power pop" type of thing that I did everything on and is my first "original".It was recorded on PC with an sw1000xg and DSPFactory card. Also, there are v-drums, Ovation, and Fender Telecaster (via POD), Rode NT1 vocal mic.Please let me know what you think...though I'm really more interested in sonic observations than in "song critique", I'll take whatever you give.Thanks.

There seemed to be a lot of effects in both bands; what was added in later (by you? the producer? the band?) and what was decided upon during songwriting? Uncle Fletcher had a very atmospheric sound, which seemed to stem from the separation of the instruments. It's a nice, clean sound, but I'm just curious: was this something that 'came to be' in the process, or was it planned? In other words, was it a production decision or was it in the engineering?

Seizure was neither recorded, produced, mixed or mastered by me.I adopted this project, I have remixed it, mastered it, changed a LOT of creative control and hope to post it ...except the lead vocalist is not "in"...since he mixed, produced and mastered the one that is posted...so Oh well...we may never hear "my" work on it. The founder of seizure is stoked by what I did to it....he may want to recut the vocals so it is ours. It is the founders writing.Uncle Fletcher on the other hand is my Productions, my mix (except we had not added the kick drum track yet on the mix presented)..and unmastered (the hot highs and the unbalanced conditions)I heard the band in practice and worked them into that sound. When we were finished recording, I punched up reformat on the tapes and started over to increase the performance. It went to press before we added the kick drums (in limited numbers) and it is now a complete finished project.I wanted the recording to sound indentical to what they sound like live. It does.I recorded it dry, and from memory added the effects and the audiophilia to make the product something enjoyable.I liked what I heard live at 120dB in the practice room, so that is what I went for.Took less than 3 days start to finish."Hello I must be going" by Phil Collins was done on an 8 track, and so was this one. 1 single ADAT.I used my talent in arrangement, production technique, direction and engineering on the Uncle Fletcher.

I mostly have my own songs, which are NOT an exercise in technique, and the two bands I'm working with now, which have just finished tracking and aren't in a very presentable state. Bleh.--Gabriel

Thank you! Great! Everyone has some fine tracks. Due to all the events last week, I have been busy and have not heard them all..what I have heard are real good!Here is some mastering:First, this was recorded live in 1969, I did not get rid of the tape hiss.

Might wanna give the guitars a little more gust to 'em, to avoid an eighties type guitar sound, but everything was clear, the vocals cut nicely, and nothing sounded out of whack. You've got skill!

Hi guys, great thread! I had to come out of lurker mode to tell Bill thank you!!!! That JHLW master is phenomenal. I honestly almost came to tears over the performance, and the sound quality is marvelous, tape hiss and all. Uncle Fletcher sounds great as well.
While I am out of hiding, if you all don't mind I will offer some observations on the posted material, 'cause I have a cable connection as well and would love to offer my totally amatuer opinon.
Teacher, I only listened to the first track but, whew, it blew me away. Totally hittin', for real!
Keijo, I don't remember which track I listened to but the combo of heavy guitars and cello(?) in the intro was killer, and the sound was truly excellent.
Bigtree, help! My computer kept wanting to use Quicktime to open your music and I would rather just download it and use winamp.
Butterhead, I listened to your soundscapes in the other forum and the other feedback you got was right on, it sounds super-pro.
Traumakind, what a voice and vocal sound on that lead vox. I really like this song, by the end all the elements are in and really fit together well. The back and forth pan on the harpsichord/fuzzy thingy near the middle there kinda distracted me from the lead vox a little, but was killer as lead where the vox weren't.
Theron, I listened to divine world preview.(3x!) The song is great, the vox have a great quality, and sit nicely out front. In my extremely unexpert opinion, the hard pan on the second guitar puts the mix really off balance until that third gtr comes in, and then the hard pan of both of those is a litlle unnatural. Perhaps you could try having them panned slightly more centered to get them to blend a little better. The lead gtr pulls the song together really nicely. Overall, it's great!
Blades, I checked out "can't stop" and really dug it. Nice acoustic sound on the intro, a really unique, crisp sound. The stabs on the electric guitar sit real nice in the pocket, and all around every thing seems to have its place in the mix. From the interesting intro to the dubbed out ending, this song is really cool, and the choice of sounds and the movement through the instruments is great. The only criticism I have is that on my system the high hat/ride(?) kinda sits on top of the vocal a little, and when it makes room for the tambourine I think the vox really benefits. All in all, really impressive.

Check out Broken Board, Black Sand Beach, or Tubes and Silver Bells. These are some rough mixes of a current project that I have been working on with a singer/songwriter friend. There a quite a few timing flaws and the like, due to a disjointed recording schedule and a new DAW(this is the first project with the computer) but let me know what ya'all think about the sounds and mixes. I could really use a few pointers to get me going in the right direction.
Again, great thread and great posts. Thanks for the chance to come out of hiding!

Thank for the comments below. A few of my own comments about what you said:It's interesting that you specifically pointed out the sound of the acoustic at the beginning. A few people like it, but most thought it was bad. I 'm not sure what I thought of it...I'm torn...it sounds good, but something about it is just not warm enough. And I've also posted in the guitar area, asking for ideas as to how to get another sound out of it..."take the ovation out of the ovation".Also, about the hi-hat...I agree. Especially when I'm using the "full open" hat sound in the part just before the chorus and also in the last part of the chorus. The problem that I had was that I mixed the cymbals, including the hi-hat together in a stereo pair and the hi-hat was a little too hot, which meant that when I sent the pair to the post fader aux, the hi-hat also got a bit too much verb on it and got even a little louder. I really didn't realize that it was just a little too hot in the overall mix until too late in the process (master) and I didn't feel like going back and fixing it...I'm lazy and I had heard the song TOO MANY times as is was Rolling Eyes

The other thing that I'll change next time is to also bring down the tamborine just a hair, and next time I will use a real one instead of a midi one...I just didn't have one around.I'm glad you had good feedback for me...Thanks again.Blades

Ok, this is by no means pro. But im pretty satisfied, and considering that this is my third real attempt at this I think its good. It was recorded in my basement, and mixed in my bedroom... so dont be too hard on me.
The two songs at the top are the new ones.
