Geez I feel like a moron here Sad
two problems.
1.) I have PT mix+ with the mp3 plugin. I love it! When I upload an mp3 file to this server and then click to here it, it only shows the ><><><><>#<#>#<#>#<#> LANGUAGE. What am I doing wrong? My client is set right I'm sure...everyone elses plays great.
2.) How do you set up mp3 streaming on mp3.com? I went to mp3 but what a nightmare. Do they charge for it and is there an easier html setup to make your pages there then the demo I looked at for creating an mp3 page? Maybe because it's new to me it seems a bit clunky but it gets easy once you start with it.
here's what i'm talking about shes near
or shes near
any help would be appreciated.

...Here is what I know about that Big tree.
First, I have quicktime 5 installed on my PC. Your track loaded fine and plays...the top sounds really squirrly...but the track is doing it.
128KBsec is the MP3.com rate.
I tried to upload some tracks at 160, VBR, and 192...They never showed up. Funny thing, I am on the site for 4Star Daydream (another band I am working on). I uploaded the tracks...No show..
Had a devil of a time getting MP3 .com to explain why or what was happening...
Been to darn busy to upload the tracks(128K) anyway...also, they are rough mixes by the artist...Still need enhancements...Which will take me about 2 days (which I need to schedual)and then the upload.

Confirm the bitrate. Someone correct me please if I am wrong but www.mp3.com (to my best knowledge) will only accept 128KB/sec. Please tell me I am mistaken.
Secondly, the Mac. Wonder if their is an issue there...should not be...but you know how it can be with Macs...Best damn computers in the world...but only about 10% of homes use them (from my last data). Also around 95...Mac was the king for studios...not now....
The quicktime file association may not be compatable with the codec for MP3.com...Pro tools MP3 plug-in should work!!
After 8 days...the dude at MP3.com basically could not give a clear answer to the issue I had.
I know I sound like a dumbass here...and the Moderator of this forum don't know for sure?? Sad eh??...At least I am honest...
That is why we are here to answer these questions. I never had problems before uploading tracks to MP3.com...until 3 weeks ago. Perhaps their is some code on their site with creshindo that is clogging up the works.
I will have an answer sometime today...Time to get to the bottom of it all....
If you "get it" at 128K...it bloody well should work.
I need to redux the tracks I need to post (do one real quick) and convert to 128K.
We will see!

Chris,
If you want to stream a MP3 you need to make a redirector file just like "Real Audio or Windows Media files"
Create a .txt file and point it to your .MP3...
h**p://www.yourdomain.com/yourfolder/yourmp3
save it as a text file and change the extension to .m3u...yourmp3.m3u
Double click the .m3u file and it will start to stream your .MP3
Hope this helps!
Robert Mark

Hi Robert, thanks for the tip but I'm not sure what you used to create the m3u file. The file you sent me streams my song but damm if I can duplicate it for other files or post it online.
When you say redirect it do you mean
shes near

If i do a text file it just opens up the actual text Sad

Can one put this link (m3u files) on line and then we would have streaming?

cool!
Chris

Hi Chris,
To make playlists, you can just use Winamp, or whatever your favorate mp3 player is that's capable of playing/saving playlists. Then you do the following (I'll give the process for Winamp, but I'm sure it's not that different for others):
1. Start Winamp
2. Choose "Play/Location"
3. Input the location of your mp3 file (for example, http://myserver.mydomain.com:8000/file/mountpoint/name_of_file.mp3 - this is an example for an Icecast server. I don't know what kind of mp3 server you are using, if any. It looks from the m3u file of 'She's Near' like you're just serving them from a directory on your webserver? Are you using the MP3 module for Apache?)
4. Save the playlist
5. Put the playlist on the server then make a link to it instead of to the mp3 file.
Another thing you will need to do is add the following two lines to your mime.types file, if they aren't already there. I'm pretty sure they are not, as when I try to follow your m3u link to 'She's Near' using Netscape, all I get is a text printing of the m3u file. It works with IE because IE is more forgiving and tries to guess at what you really want, not just what it has been told like Netscape does. Anyway, here's the lines:
audio/x-mpegurl m3u
audio/x-scpls pls
This will make sure that the m3u or pls (both playlist files) files go out with the headers needed to tell the client that it's a playlist file, not just text.
A good place to go to read about this (their examples are pretty PC centric, but the info is relevant to most platforms) is Shoutclub
Hope this helps.
Doug

Doug, thank you my Edmontonian friend, I used to play the Forum, Londondary, Cap, Conv, Rex etc. years back, what a riot! Called "Jet"
I might be over my head on this one. I can read the file that Robert sent me just fine. It streams great (from my desktop) but I can't duplicate it for one thing or post the attachment on the site for others to stream. Meaning I would like to be able to repeat what he did for me and do other files.
Now I have a feeling I need to set the server up for streaming mp3. Although if Robert made an m3u file for "shes near, sent it to me as an attachment and it streamed is our server set up already?

Unfortunately G2 won't do it. But the newest version, 8, will do Real, Quicktime, and MP3. Any chance of you being able to get a free upgrade, or use the small 25 seat free server for testing the quality of its MP3 and Quicktime serving? It would probably be the easiest way to get going in a hurry, as Real Server will take care of generating the playlists and mime types for you.
Doug

Chris,
When you create your .txt file (any text editor will work) with the link to your .MP3...example:
http://recording.org/mp3/bigtree/shes-near.MP3
Just rename the text file to shes-near.m3u
upload that file to your server and link to it from your web page.
Create a folder called playlist and drop your .m3u in it.
The end user clicks on the link for shes-near.m3u which in turn points to shes-near.MP3 and it streams.
This is the down and dirty methed with no streaming software on your server.
Your server will dish out as much as it can at one time until it chokes.
If you use the Real Server pakage that Doug was talking about it will ensure that 25 people can click at one time and play the file.
If you are going to put all your .MP3 files in the same dir. (/bigtree/song1
(/bigtree/song2
(/bigtree/song3...ect
Just change the name in the .txt file to reflect the song name keeping the path the same.
Each time you change a name save that text file as whatevername.m3u and upload to your server and link to it from your web page.
Looks like Doug has you hooked up with the Mime types...your on your way!
Robert Mark
