Downloading (modem) now.
Steve, I base the critique on sonics and recording, mix, and masterability. Then I base them on musicality, lyrics, message and performace.
Next I look at the entire package. I then comment on the things I see that can be improved for overal artistic vibe. I never trash anyone (unless their song is a series of armpit farts or narration of dirty thought)
I will do my best to be as contructive for you as possable in this critique. I also like to do mastering..so if you need my services..I am avalable to RO members for an extra special discount. Some of the links below (threads) will let you see my involvement.
I also want you to listen to some of these fellows tracks and see what you think. IF you have any comments about others tracks, they are deeply appreciated. I realize that this artform is objective and subjective so no two people have the same feel for it..but I really want as many as possable to become involved.
Thanks for submitting. They will be on the hard drive within 30 mins..(if the fucking power does not go out again). I got a UPS but this computer cannot handle the slower rise time of it.
Welcome and enjoy this sector of RO. |

The Song killer
Nice acoustic work..I miss being in NW Arkansas dude.
I record the harp with two mic's open..try it..
Love the megaphone sound. You do it with a plug in, intercom mic'ed or eq?
I actually used a bull horn once on Uncle Fletchers album (living with numbers)
You could put more bottom on the acoustic Guitar..want me to do that and send it back to you?
Cool I like the vibe..some fattning here and there and it will be braodcast ready.
Cool..Now the next song...
Fool for love.
Vocal leaning hard to the left. Lots of SSSSSSSSSSSS on the vox.(intro) The whole mix needs more 200 to 700hZ to be full and fat during the intro...but then the track comes in and the notes that are in those ranges are good. The whole two mix needs shifting right a good bit...I want to center the kick drum for power.. The panning is tasty..we need to get the image centered on the main. Good steel work. It is leaning left pretty hard..I can fix that for you. Give your acoustic guitars more mid bass so they have body without interfering with the mix. I can kick this one up a few pegs and make it really killer.
Your frequency responce is good.
Artistically, I love them both.
You make me miss the midnight sessions I had in Alma Arkansas by guys that would just come by with their axe and we created monsters! Some serious mountain men with the fiddles and harps laying unreal sound. We drank moonshine and had a blast till 7 am. No wonder I am divorced..but I got the tapes and a way to get in touch with each of them!
Damn good work buddy.
What monitors are you useing and how do you calibrate your channel balance?
Needs some adjustments.
Damn good vibe dude...
Now d loading take it away........ |

Ok, fool for love has had some spinkle dust put on it and some imaging corrections.
Vocal and lick stillleans to the left..but that is in the mix and really, anything I can do on this end to correct that will mess with pahse on the left channel some..poss. ruining the vibe.
I can correct it..but it takes multistaging to analog recorders..and that takes TIME. I did a quick vibe fix.
My email is audiowkstation@aol.com but it is limited to 2 megs tops per email...well here it comes anyway.
Working good.
Got icq?
My number is 43786958
I will be happy to send the file back to you to hear..and collect your thoughts. |

Bill, thanks for the quick reply.
I'm originally from northwest Arkansas, and moved to northeast Oklahoma and then OKC. I'm cursed with both the rural hill vibe and the rural flatlander vibe. It's very hard in Oklahoma City to find musicians who'll accept the flatlander vibe (or the hill vibe for that matter).
On Killer:
The harp was straight into an AKG C414B/TLII, I think. The effect on the vocal was EQ, I believe. I can ask the engineer for the specifics.
On Fool For Love:
I think you've just about nailed everything. I mixed this as I recorded it. My monitors are Yorkville YSM-1 passives. Calibrate the channel balance? You'll need to educate me. You're talking above my technical know how.
I don't have ICQ. I'll check on it now. Yes, I'd love to hear the corrections you've discussed. You're very kind.
I appreciate your time and thoughtful replies. |

I'm going to remix Fool For Love based upon your suggestions. I thought I'd have time by now.
Did you ever get a chance to listen to Take It Away? |
