Hmmm.....sounds like it's time for one of those shiney new Windows XP Pro disks. What do you think Opus(as if I need to ask)?

Ok, Maybe due to the fact that you are running a more intensive version of my main board you will need to raise the core voltage up to at least 1.6 or so....
Otherwise I don't touch anything else as it's not necessary
In regards to the 98 CD not installing....does it say your hard drive is causing this or that it just can't read off of the CD itself?

Your system I believe is a non Northwood. You can OC it, you will need to look into the BIOS to see what speeds and voltage settings you have. Find this out and post the info and I'll point ya in the right direction

When the CPU is running at 1.6gHz the volt core is automatically set to 1.7.

Hmm... Do I dare to raise it even more?
Then I have to disable the "Auto mode" for volt core, or?

The CD is fine. It is the IBM hard-disk that is full of bad clusters... I reformatted it and installed Win98 again. It works for the moment..

Huh? You have it at 1.7? How did it get there? It should be set to 1.5 for the core which is the default setting.
Here's what I would do...set the BIOS to the default settings, disable the necessary stuff you don't want...i.e. USB, FireWire, Serial ports...etc etc etc!
Than once that is done try the speed change of the CPU again and see what happens. That should take care of ya!

The default setting IS 1.7V. I can't set it lower than that in manual mode.

If in auto mode BIOS chooses 1.7V for both 1600 and 2133mHz...

Is there something seriously wrong with this? :confused:

At this point I'm thinking you have the jumpers set wrong on the motherboard somehow...do you have the board in jumper free mode? Check the manual and visually double check to see if that's the case.

OK, if you have Win98 and XP you can only delete the XP partition. When you do a dual boot config you have to have the legacy OS first and then install the new OS. So, if you want to delete the Win98 partition you are thus disabling the ability to boot off of XP. 98 is the primary active partition and XP is the secondary! Which is not active!
The only way to do this is to wipe the entire drive.
Thoughts on your OC'ing problems. I have a feeling you did not get the Northwood procesor. That's my only thought at the moment. I don't have my system here and don't think I'll be getting it back until sometime next week so I don't know how I can double check this with mine.

Alright,
I looked at my BIOS to see about OC'ing my 1.7ghz P4 and I wasn't really sure what I needed to look for. Is the actual overclocking done through a hardware jumper, or is it some BIOS setting? My buss is 400mhz and my processor is running at 1.7ghz. I don't know whether my proc is Northwood or not, all I know is that it was bought around the end of last year. Any other info that I would need to know in order to OC this thing???

Sandra says my proc. model is "P4W (Willamette) Pentium 4 1.8G+ 1.7V"...
Hmmm... that's not what I ordered! What kind of processor is this? Should I switch?

Sandra also says that it is 1600mHz/100mHz FSB. What then does the "400mHz systembus" on the box the processor came in mean?

Partition-problem: I did install Win98 first on the primary partition, then XP on the extended partition. I want to delete the XP-partition. I should be able to do this? Why won't fdisk let me?

Ah ha! I thought so! Williamett is a 400Mhz FSB but it can not be OC'd like the Northwood due to the core voltage! D'oh! I would definately be yelling at the place you bought it from!
I'm thinking at this point that it won't let you because you made it active in some way...try and make it non active...either that or you have to delete a logical drive and not a primary...

Maybe I'm going for a 2.4gHz Northwood instead now and use this Willamette processor for another computer...?

The XP partition is on the extended DOS-partition, but doesn't show up as a logical drive in Win98 or DOS. It is not made active by Fdisk but XP tells me it is a "Boot" partition which is the same as being active, or?
Fdisk says: "You can't delete a partition while there are logical drives defined".
When I try to delete the logical drive in the extended partition it says: "No logical drives defined"..... :p

I don't know how to get around this even if I wanted to wipe the whole drive, which I'm not too eager to do right now, since Win98 runs so smoothly and I've installed everything for the 'nth time in a short period.

Any ideas?

(...and why won't GigaStudio work with XP or 2000 on this machine? It works great on my laptop and another W2K-machine in the studio...)
