Though I dont have the resources to build proper Bass Traps I have a few questions and ideas.
After reading the FAQ I'm planning on mounting some 703 off the walls of my studio in "random" places. Varying between 4 and 2 inches from the wall.
I have some Bi-Fold closet doors which seem to be made of Balsa or Pine - not sure... BUT
Could I mount some 704 on the Back sides and place these in the corners for Bass traps?
I could cover all four corners and place some on the side walls for diffusion.
My main concern in my room is not Bass response but flutter echoes ( I can hear them when I clap )
Think these Bi-folds might work?
Their width when fully "open" is about 2 ft.
Lastly - If I put 703/705 in the corners , all the way up to the ceiling, what is the recommended "filler" material?
Thanks for any ideas - great forum

Dennis,

Sure, you can use those to hold the fiberglass in place.
> If I put 703/705 in the corners , all the way up to the ceiling, what is the recommended "filler" material? <
Either nothing or fluffy fiberglass. Adding fluffy fiberglass in the corner behind the rigid fiberglass will smooth out the absorption's response curve, making it more uniform.

So the best way would be to put the Fiberglass so it's behind the doors?
Meaning - the doors exterior would be seen in the room and the fiberglass would be on the backside facing the corner?
What if I put some of the doors on the side and back walls kind of like "diffusors" with the 703 backing again -
Plus I can cover the side facing into the room with foam for some high freq. dispersion.
Sorry - just trying to use what I have - Bidget is so low and I'm looking for some flutter echo control more than anything -
Plus - this is a project studioo!
Thanks for any help

No, in front of the doors so it faces the room and can absorb.

You can do that with either absorption or diffusion. If the room is too live sounding use fiberglass. If the liveness is just about right but you're having problems with echoes and ringing, then use the angled doors instead, with nothing else attached.

| I'm about as hopeless as they come and I managed to build some of Ethan's traps. If you purchase your lumber at a Home Depot or Lowes they'll usually cut it to whatever dimensions that you specify. Lowes cut the plywood for me for free, and I have a small circular saw that I use to cut the smaller lumber.
The traps work well and are inexpensive. Perhaps you could try building two this month, two next month, etc.? I really don't know your exact situation, but if it's just that you're worried if you can do it, believe me it's not that hard. |
