I think I've figured this one out.
I have 8 bass traps in my main room and I carpeted the floor. When we practice, I noticed that as I added more traps (i didn't install them all at once) things started to sound tighter at lower volumes. The room sounds very good when we rehearse now, and it helps out a lot.
Well, I really figured out how much better the room sounds when we went to play a show in a club last week. It sounded terrible in there! I've played that club probably 10 or 20 times in the past, but after taking a year off from playing shows and only really playing in my studio rehearsal area, the difference in acoustics was EXTREMELY noticable! Things that sounded awesome in the rehearsal room sounded like garbage in the club and had to be retooled.
So for anyone that's on the fence and wondering if they should bother with acoustic treatment, especially Panel Traps, here's your encouragement! EVERY MEMBER of the band was able to recognize the change in sound quality, even the drummer! |

HEY, I'm a drummer too!!!
Great it worked out. I'm doing the reflective floor-absorbent ceiling at the moment. After that I'll start on the panel traps (need to do one thing at a time to really appreciate the improvements...).
Greetings,

Hey, what´s with the downtalking of the drummer? O.K., we can only (hardly) count to four, but usually that´s all what´s needed!

Konrad,
> Would it suffice to put the panel traps up against the plastered gypsum board and caulk it all the way around <
Yes. The goal is to have the bass trap boxes be sealed air tight. So as long as the gypsum boards are not cracked or able to vibrate on their own, you can just build the traps right onto them.

| Also, you could make a back to the traps using a thick board. This may be a good idea if your wall happens to be warped or if you don't want them fixed to the walls forever. There are many threads on this forum about how to do this stuff. |

Thanks a lot, guys. Another small step on the long road to an acoustically treated rehearsal-room/project studio.
@by: Yeah, I´ll check it out again. When reading through the posts I´m obviously not paying enough attention to the details. I always figured the questions about the thick-board-backs were concerning the fiberglass-type traps. :d:
