Hey guys, first time reader, first time poster. A few students and myself are entering into a small business competition here in Buffalo with a propsal for a record company. We're all huge music fans and are really excited about it. We're right now in the data collection process, just trying to learn everything we can. Does anyone have any ideas, leads, or advice? It would be really helpful. Thanks for reading! |

Thanks for replying! The proposal is for our own record company. The competition is to make a business plan for a real small business to be set up in the area, and we have chosen a record company to create. Hope that helps. Thanks again |

Are you planning on doing it for real or is it a school project? Either way you have to decide what your company's identity is. Are you going to specialize in a certain style of music (example: become THE label for Gregorian chants set to latin sambas) or music from all styles that meets a certain precondition you set (example: only music that sounds REALLY GREAT, or music that you think will sell REALLY WELL). I would recommend that you should go with music that you really love as opposed to what you think will really sell, regardless of the question of finding a market niche. Here's why- huge companys spend tons of money trying to predict what the public is going to like or dislike, and, effectively, they gain little advantage for their efforts. Essentially, no one can reliably predict the future (how the public is going to react). The best anyone can do is an educated guess. That said, if you concentrate on putting out music that you really love you are winning. If the music speaks to you it will probably speak to someone else.
Now if you will excuse me, I have to go and make some music that I really love. :c: David |

You might try to contact some existing independent labels. They may give you insight from their experiences. |
