Has anyone tried removing the foil backing on FRK insulation panels? (to create "un-faced" panels)
It is my understanding that FRK panels are not as effective when treating low frequencies. Is this accurate? |

That is what I thought before, but I was reading absorption coefficients posted by the mods at the new forum on www.studiotips.com which suggest differently. It's hard to know what to believe when even the people who do the tests can't agree on what makes for "fair" testing.

I've read many posts here and I haven't read anything contrary to what Doug mentioned.. It seems more logical to me since the foil backing ads to the stiffness of the panels.. I would say that its true, if mounted with a gap from the wall, instead of on the wall..
I'm sure Ethan has a better explanation to that..

Tubedude,
I'm not sure what is driving you crazy. Is it:
A. Where to draw the line between salesmanship and the truth.
B. Why there are no hard facts regarding acoustic treatment
C. Discussion topics that forum mods can't squelch with an easy answer
D. The confusion created by businessmen who engage in swordfights because they are in competition with one another
E. My question about removing foil backing from FRK panels
? :d: |

Hey Mason,
I think that by placing either 703 or 705 spaced from the wall will help increase low end absorption. The reason why FRK stuff will help you even more is because it ads to the stiffness of the sheet and with the gap from the wall, you also deal with the small movement of the sheet, acting like a panel trap.. not to mention that this gap distance is also 1/4 of a certain wavelength, therefore helping you even further with absorption...
I hope my line of thought is right.....
my 2c..
take care

Dude, Mason, and Gil,
> Ethan - What do you think? <
I've never measured the difference as fiberglass is actually used, with an air gap or across a corner. So all I have to go by is the published specs which show the FRK facing helping at the low end when mounted flat on a wall.

maybe I'll be able to do some measurements on with this in the studio that I have on the works.. as soon as I get some results, I'll post them..
until then... good luck. |
