I was at Home Depot getting some hardwood, and I wandered past some ceiling grids and tiles. There were some 2foot by 4 foot ceiling panels that had a thin white perforated front and was fiberglass on the back, about 1/2 inch thick.
Wonder if that would be a decent alternative to putting 703 on the ceilings for some high end absorbtion over the mix area and the drums. I think the panels were $.48 per square foot, shich made them only about $3.84 each. Pretty cheap.
Any word on these things? Is the white shit reflective? That of course would ruin its purpose.
Thanks!
Paul

Paul,
I have some of those panels and they are indeed 703, or maybe 701 which is a little lighter and less dense. Yes, you can use that, but you'll want to double or triple them up to make them thicker. Basically, the more panels you stack together, the lower in frequency the "bundle" will absorb to. Even using four panels, for two inches total thickness, will not be too many.
As for the white facing, I suspect that will reflect a little at mid and high frequencies. So either use the other side, or peel off the facing.

ethan,
i have a lot of a very similar ceiling tile product. except my ceiling tiles are 5/8" thick and are 2x2'.
could these be used in your panel trap designs as a alternative to 1" 703?
perhaps 2 or 3 layers? |

Thanks.
So, in wall/ceiling corners, with an air space behind it that stuff would probably be perfectly effective as a single layer for controlling flutter? At less than $4 a piece, setting them up with an air space in those joints it would probably work just fine in a single layer for flutter. Ya think?
Might save a few bucks in less critical places where I was going to put the more expensive 703. Nice. |

Is the stuff you're talking about "Sonoflex, by Armstrong". I was going to post asking the same thing - as I saw the panels at Home Depot (I don't remember the exact model numbers) and can't seem to find the Dow Corning product around. If this Armstrong stuff is basically interchangeable w/ doubling up, that would make things way easier on my construction plans.

Sure, as long as you don't make them so thick they touch the front panel.

Hey All,
You are all saying this is cheaper??? Where are you buying your 703??
I am getting a bundle of 703 (20) 2" x 2' x 4' for $63.00
The stuff you are getting you say is 3.43 for 1" 2' x 2' panels. If you have to double that up plus add two together length wise that is almost $14 for the same thing as 703 for $3.
Maybe I am understanding you wrong, but IMHO $3 has got to be better than $14. Dont go with the owens brand, Knauff makes the exact same stuff (703) Rigid for less than half the price. Yes It has the same acoustic properties.
just my 2 cents. hope it helps.
