QUESTION 24:

WHAT WAS FIRST.....
THE MICROPHONE OR THE PRE-AMP?

(up to 100 points for a convincing argument either way...... no more than 100 lines )

You have at least eight hours.
Get to it. Very Happy

I would have to say the microphone came first. The first microphone was a telephone transmitter invented by Emile Berliner (1851 - 1929) for Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. This microphone was a carbon microphone and because of this it was able to produce a large enough signal without the need for signal amplification. However the amount of distance this signal could cover was limited . It was in 1906 that Lee De Forest (1873-1961) built the first vacuum tube triode. Building off of Ambrose Fleming who invented the diode valve in 1904, De Forest saw that if a third electrode were added it would serve as an amplifier and a rectifier. The “Audion” was the first electronic signal amplifier. In 1912 he furthered his research with a three element tube as an amplifier with 42 decibels of gain which AT&T was interested in as a telephone repeater device. His Inventions were first used as a detector of radio waves, then as an amplifier for long distance calls, and now the major technology of the radio transmitter, still in use today. It also became the key component of all radio, telephone, radar, television, and computer systems before the invention of the transistor in 1947.

Sir Charles Wheatstone developed the first microphone in 1827, in fact, he also coined the name. The word is Greek in origin, with "micro" meaning small and "phon" meaning sound. The device was not electromechanical and predated Emile Berliner's electric microphone by at least forty-five years. It also came before the preamp. Since the original microphone was self contained, there was no need for one at the time. In short, the microphone came way before the preamp.

….wow….!!!!

When Dougs’ post came through I thought ….cool…
However , FREAKY has gone back even further and made things difficult for me.

The Sebatron was aware of the Former but not the Latter.

The Sebatron ponders game extension ….
Evaluations are taking place.

Judges are being consulted…..stay tuned. Wink

Ok..
For starters , you both said the Micropohone was first , ..which is what I thought.
…so let’s say that is 40 points there.

But we have contradictions here:

“The first microphone was a telephone transmitter invented by Emile Berliner (1851 - 1929) for Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. “

“Sir Charles Wheatstone developed the first microphone in 1827, in fact, he also coined the name. “

Wheatstone was indeed a pioneer…
Additionally , Bell’s claim for the first ‘telephone’ is actually disputed in a few circles.

….Wheatstone coined the name?…....damm….

“The device was not electromechanical and predated Emile Berliner's electric microphone by at least forty-five years. “

…FREAKY , can you supply any more DATA about this non-electromechanical Microphone? Sad

Hey Seb, That divice he was refering to was very similar to a stethoscope. The stethoscope was invented in 1816, by Rene Laennec

The first microphone was nothing like mic's as we know them today. The device was acoustic in nature more like a stephoscope. "Besides transmitting sounds to a distance, Wheatstone devised a simple instrument for augmenting feeble sounds, to which he gave the name of 'Microphone.' It consisted of two slender rods, which conveyed the mechanical vibrations to both ears, and is quite different from the electrical microphone of Professor Hughes." Was it really a mic? Yes, in EVERY sense of the word, because Wheatstone invented the word to name his invention. Oddly enough, he also coined the phrase "telephone". Was there voltage conversion? No. The definition of microphone has evolved over the years. If the first horse drawn carraige was called automobile it would still be automobile- combustion engine or no!
Here's a couple links showing he coined the term...
one two
And there's many more out there... Google sir charles wheatstone microphone if you're curious!
