Cool!

Anybody know how many screws I should be using to hold 5/8" sheetrock to resilient channel?

I was just planning on using screws long enough to get 3/4" penetration on the channel. I have fine thread drywall screws for that.

Also, Rod recomended a product called super duct. Will the 1.5" stuff be good enough? I was thinking of droping through the sheetrock with that stuff then taking a few 90 degree turns in the ceiling then I use normal flex over to the existing flex.

Also, anybody know if there is a difference between the stuff I can get at the local building supply store and the resilient channel sold at soundproofing.org?

I think the soundproofing.org stuff is 18 guage but the local guys said it was 25 guage?

Most likely the main difference is 3X the price - that site is a good place to stay away from. Quite a bit of misinformation, at least double the price on several items, etc -

For ceilings, you want heavier gauge RC - one of the better ones is Dietrich RC deluxe, their standard product is NOT recommended for ceilings.

http://www.dietrichindustries.com/bigdprod/framingaccessories.htm

You'll find that locally RC will cost you around $.20 a foot, and may run anywhere from twice that to lots more on the net.

Type "W" screws means they go into Wood - Type "S" screws means they go into Steel (like steel studs, RC, etc) from the sound of it you're OK on what you have mentioned. Not all screws have the Type designator, some just say "for wood" or "for metal" - that refers to what you're fastening TO, not what is being attached... Steve

Hmm... The local company says they resilient is only in 25 guage.
Is that not heavy enough for ceilings?

I just ran into the same issue w/ my distributor. RC only in 25 guage.

To answer your screwy question...walls, you can go 24"OC first layer, 16"OC second layer. Ceiling, if I remember in the USG handbook says 16"OC first layer, 12"OC second layer.

You'll want to use the course screws to attach the RC to the wood frame. For attaching the rock to the RC, use S screws (for steel) which is the fine thread.

For successive layers.. First layer, you can use 1 1/4" screws, second layer, go up to a 1 5/8" screw. This is if you're using two layers of 5/8" drywall.

Be sure to mark where your studs are. You don't want to short out your wall onto the studs.

Not yet. The 2 different places I've bought RC at so far. One of them looks like it will do the job fine. It feels a littler heavier. But the other one which I think was the regular RC1 from Dietrich didn't seem to work as well. When I used it on the walls, had a problem w/ screws stripping on the second layer. But the other stuff worked great.

I posted some new pix of the walls w/ RC on the thread over on Johns site. The stuff on the "Front" wall seems to be the better stuff. It's a little wider too.

Steel, if you can get someone to sell it to you, has gone up. When I bought RC at the end of last year, it was 2.02 for a 12 foot stick. Now it's close to $4 a stick. (at one vendor anyway).

Right now, I'm out of $$$. (had some unexpected purchases/bills...). I may have enough to buy some RC if I can get a good price on it, but I've got to wait another month before I can buy the 12 foot drywall for the ceiling. It's already over $10 a sheet here. And I need about 10 sheets for the ceiling.

Like knightfly said, use the Dietrich RC deluxe. You'll be fine w/ 2 layers of 5/8". Plus, when I was asking the vendor about the RC, they say they use 25 guage all the time in apartments w/ 2 layers of 5/8". So...I imagine it will be fine.

Why not use Kinetics IsoMax clips and standard furring channel? A single metal or wood stud wall, with two layers of gyp board on one side, R-19 in the middle, the clips, channel and two layers of gyp on the other can give an STC 64. If you use Quiet Solutions Quiet Coat on the studs, you could add another 5 or so to the STC.

The problem with the RC is that there have been many accidents on construction sites with it, due to installation errors. If loaded incorrectly, the RC will sag, the walls and floors "short" and the floating os over. People adding treatment, shelving, speaker mounts to these walls are contributing to failure.

If space is really an issue, use the Quiet Solutions Quiet Rock. You will not need any channel at all.

Brent, what do those IsoMax clips cost? It looks like a simple piece of rubber inside a chunk of metal. What keeps the gypsum-laden hat track from cutting through the piece of rubber?

Did you track down any LF test specs on those things? I combed the KineticsNoise website, but no luck.

Lee

Those clips are $5 a piece. I had them quoted awhile back.

It adds up in a hurry.

Yup, they quoted me $4.50 today, and said you need one about every 5 square feet.
