Found me a KSM44 on E-Bay----COOL!!!!!!!!
Just want to ask any 44 owners a couple of questions about this mic.
As far as vocals-------------what should I be aware of, ie;mics characteristics?.
And for micing guitar amps-------------what should I be aware of?
Any advise is more than welcome Thumbs Up

Don't know if this is any good to you, but I saw one in front of a sax on a British TV programme last night. The BBC has an astonishing collection of equipment, so it must have beaten off some really expensive competition! Don't you just love hearing things like that when you buy something new Thumbs Up

I've never used one, but it seems to be loved by those who have.

Enjoy!

Don't have any specific hints, but I've used the KSM44 quite a bit and it is one of the better all-purpose mics out there. Sounds good on woodwinds, brass, piano, etc...

I don't have a huge mic locker, so take what I say with a grain of something....

First off, even if it's not the best mic for every job, I have never put it up without it sounding at the very least decent. More often than not, it really shines.

Some of my uses:

On my cello during a recent concert of traditional Persian music. Worked great for the house sound, AND it recorded very well.

On violin in cardiod.

On violin and piano used as the "side" mic in an M/S setup in the figure-8 setting. Actually, I've used it a lot for m/s work. The fact that it is a fairly neutral LDC helps it shine in this area.

Have used it on hip-hop, ethnic, folk, etc, Vox. does very well, but does little to flatter. If you're looking for a very special stand-out-of-the-crowd character, this is probably not the best mic for that. It is very smooth with a bit of warmth in the lower mids to my ears.

Excellent room mic in omni.

Have close miked some Persian plucked instruments(along the lines of banjo and lute) with great success.

Oh, regarding your question of things to be aware of with the mic for vocals, I have found that in some situations, on some voices it can sound a bit mid-rangey. Kind of honkey. Not intensely though, and this is not the norm however.

The pre's that I've used it with mostly are the VMP-2, the BG1, and the Motu 896hd.

My other "vocal" mic is the Soundelux U195 just so you have a point of reference.

Lastly, the thing is built like a tank. Very solid.

Hope this is somewhat useful info. Enjoy the mic! It's definitely a keeper!

Best,

Omid

Hi Omid
How does the KSM44 sound with the DAV BG1? How do you find the BG1 in general?

Thanks,
John Stafford
