are those vocals really that dry?

i record alot of hardcore and punk bands and alot of the albums refrenced sound like the vocals are very dry but full. i have played around with keeping the vocals dry but they endup just sounding kind of naked and not blending into the song. i was just wondering what some tips are to give the "illusion" of dry vocals but still have them sit well in the mix.

Try mixing in some short delays. Many reverb processors call these 'early reflections'.

The Sontus FX suite that is bundled with Sonar is great if you take the approach David has suggested. The early reflections are IMHO great at bringing a vocal to life, but you really need to record in a tonally neutral and dry acoustic with almost no genuine early reflections for it to work at its best.

BTW I've found a light blanket on a frame as a gobo in front and at the sides of the singer to be very effective. The light blanket won't suck the life out of the sound, but helps with reflections, and allows you to record vocals in such a way that it easy to superimpose a more flattering acoustic signature on vocal tracks.
