Hey Guys, I`m going to make a custom metal hollow door, for my room in my terrace, and I`m going to put inside it acoustic materials to fill it. What materials do you recommend me to fill a door ? ? wool ? vinyl barrier ? foam ?
Here in Argentina, at least, the professional acoustic doors are very expensive, so I `m planning to make it as I want with a manufacturer.
The dimensions are 900mm weight, 2100mm height and 45mm thickness (I have already got the frame of the door, so I could not change the dimension)
Inside the door there are 40mm aprox. cavity space to fill with acoustic material.
Thanx,
Demian |

I already worked it out....
45-40 =5
5/2 =2.5
2.5mm metal sheet. ( BOINNNNGGGGGG!!! )
Yup, fill it with sand.
I'd also weld some ties in the middle somwhere to avoid the sand making a pregnant door |

Try a solid wood door. They are more available. Line the door with a good "refrigerator like" molding, so as to make it an airtight seal. It is the air leakage around the door that allows the sound in and out. You may also need to line the frame of the door. There is no advantage to a metal door. Needless expense.
If you truly like metal, just record it. Don't build your studio out of it.

long spans of flat sheet are a no no because once welded all metal warps to some degree and your door will end up looking like a potato chip.
Unless you make it out of 3/16 of 1/4" thick, then the double edged sword of it weighing 300 lbs comes into play.
Also, sun=hot assed door.
go with wood for your door. I work with steel for a living. |

Well, I think Its not IRON or Metal (I dont know the word) so here a link: http://www.tecnobra.com/puertas/puertachapa.htm
In spanish is "Chapa" ("Madera" = wood)
The problem with the wood door is that the kind of wood door that I can Afford are low quality and I need security too. The wood doors that I can afford I can divide it in half with one kick!.
This kind of metal doors are very heavy and give more security and I think could be very good for sound.
The options are 2 :
1.- The door That I mentioned befored, filling it with sand or wool or something
2.- Door injected with polyethylene, so I dont need to fill it (i cannot do it too).
Dont watch the wood doors in the webpage please !

Then what you really need is a solid wood door with a metal skin. Sheet-metal over solid wood will be more impervious to break in and it does not have to be " beautiful". It will be less expensive, will not warp and be more dense for soundproofing. Regardless of type of door, you are still going to need refrigerator style molding for the air seal. |
