ssl g series

help i've just started working in a studio with a ssl g series 4000 console as i'm only a assistant noone tells me anything i need some help!

can someone tell me how to sub group on the g series in detail
also is it possible to insert a compressor over the vca groups?

The answer to your second question is no. There is no audio that passes through the vca group. It bassically will control faders that are assigned to it with the thumbwheel. For example, if you assign the thumbwheel on fader 24 to 8, vca 8 will control the level and mute. You can do mutes and rides on fader 24 but remember that any rides and mutes you do on vca 8 will be reflected on fader 24.

Now for audio subgroups.

Each channel has a 'subgp' button up at the mic pre/line trim. When you press in that group button, any channel assigned to that channels' bus in the bus matrix (at the top of the channel strip) will be routed to that channel. Basically what happenes is that channels' input comes from the output of its bus.

For example: say you engage the group button on channel 24 with the console in 'MIX' configuration. Instead of seeing mic or line input, the channel's input is now bus 24. If you route, let's say, channel 25 to track 24 up at the bus matrix, engage the FLOAT button near the small fader next to the group trim, the signal from the output of the large fader will feed into bus twenty four and subsequently channel 24.

would it be possible to get any pictures to see exactly what you are talking about? I am curious as well as to how basics are done on ssl's. The difference being I don't have access to one. Very Happy

?? I thought there was a small sub-group selector rotary knob thing by the fader on each channel (that is the term straight for the SSL book, use it in the studio they'll be impressed

I could be wrong, it has been a while, but I thought you just flipped the rotary knob till you found what sub-group you want, then it was then controlled by the sub-group fader

but hey i could be wrong

That is for vca groups, which I had already stated in the first point of my post. Sub grouping and vca groups, in my view, are 2 different things. (There is also a way to setup software groups in the G+ computer, but I do not want to completely confuse everyone) Remember, Reillymusic's original post was to give him details on how to sub group, which to me meant (for example) sub grouping 8 channels of audio down to one channel of audio.

you can download a shortform manual for the 4000G+ as well a front panel drawing of a channel strip and centre section so you can atleast get an idea of whats going on.
