Are you kidding??? I think it's most appropriate to use mic stands to hold microphones, but that's just my opinion...

lol :p

Ok but what to do when a drummer doesn't have a hole in the front of the kickdrum? I don't think our drummer would approve if we created one manually. Tried to put a mic before it without a hole, but it sounds muddy, and loses all the kick, wich is basically what you're trying to capture.

I play with a drummer who had a kick drum (head) without any hole in it. I used a metal can, you can use a glass, or anything that is round and appox. the right size hole your looking for. I think I used a peanut can jar, it was about 4" or so around. Any how...
Trace around the jar (or round object) with a black marker, then use a razor blade to cut the hole with.
It took me about 5 to 10 minutes
My drummer was Very Happy after I finished.

Easy-- You take the entire head off. I do this a lot for the heck of it anyway. Keeps air from blowing into the mic as much.

Off with his head!!!

Easier to just heat up the can on a burner and press it on the head and turn. Smile
Melts like buttah', be carefull and wear mitts though.

Spence:

Thanks for the slap - To rephrase my question :is there a floor stand or something that you can use to put the mic close to the floor instead of taping it onto a box like we have done?... Do you use the desktop stand, the little tripod stand or what?

Sorry for looking dull here, but I'm trying to keep the cr**p (like boom stands) out of the way of the drummer...to keep him happy, but get a good recording - Any help appreciated...

Still open - where do you recommend on the beater side - how high, position from the beater, etc to get a good sound?

John
