What problems do the IV-LS have, I already own this machine? It does have the pilot sync port and I had planed to have a Tobin sync board soidered in for sound sync. I'm still undecided on the digital vs. Analog issue. I have no trouble w/ upgrading except money so I may have to live with this machine for a while, although for what a 4.2 costs, I might be strongly tempted to go wuth a used DAT or save my money and get a Fostex. I've listened to good aguments on both sides but these mechines are begining to slowly fade into history and tapeless aquisition is becoming the norm.
I have not sent this machine off to a tech to have it cleaned and checked but that is on the schedual. The only problem w/ removing the dust cover to run 7in reels is I live in the desert so blowing dust is definatly a consideration. I think I'll more likely just keep my eyes open for a deal on a conversion kit or look for a destroyed machine w/ 7in converstion amd salvage it. Until then I'll just have to run the 5 in reel setup. Would running 5in reels become a issue during production if I'm working sound on a low budget feature? I have a midi setup and will probably digitize it for PC for my own work or I also own 2 KEM flatbed 6 plate editing machines, one w/ scope and academy standard and one w/ widescreen heads (i know, also old technology) and may end up going w/ optical sound and a work print. It just depends on what kind f a deal I can get on tetecine for editing. As for what I do for other people, I suppose that will be thier decission.
As for hiring people, locally there aren't that many and I want to learn as much as I can about all acpects of filmmaking including sound, which in my opinion is 50% of a picture. All you have to do is look at the Shining or 2001 to see how mich sound makes a movie great an Kubrick was a master at the use of sound. I also want to make myself as useful as possible. If I can't write and direct then maybe I can act, if I can't act maybe I can run camera, if I can't run camera maybe I can record sound, if I can't record sound maybe I can light it, if i cant' light it, maybe I can work as a grip. I'm learning to, and have done all these jobs but I have the least expirence in sound, so I want to learn as much as I can about it. After reading these posts I need to learn more so please keep these tips coming. We have a lot of wind here, how about some tips on running boom in windy conditions or anything else you can think of. |

I will recommend a couple of great books that you might want to read:
"Sound for film and television" by Tomlinson Holman - for whom THX is named and for a very good book on post productin is the book by Jay Rose "Audio post production for digital video"
For the wind all you can do is get a zepplin and windsock and then just listen to what it sounds like given how you are micing the talent. |

I appreciate that and I'll definately check out the refference material Can someone please answer a couple of other questions I have reguarding Nagra accessories? For example, what is this and what is its function: NAGRA / KUDELSKI Synchronize SLO - KUDELSKI 1020 RENENS - LAUSANNE . Is it an exterior sync box or is it a box that connects the pilot port to the camera? I looked for a site that describes the function of Nagra accessories but could find one. Also do Nagra mixers boards have phantom power ans will the Nagra slating system work with all Nagras w/ a pilot? Thanks[/img] |
