I just ordered a set of Yamaha MSP5A's...

They fit all the requirements for me......

I admit if I was recording music - and had the room - I mean the actual space for them to sit(!), as well as a larger room for the sound to be used, I'd probably go with some 8" somethings(?) - or at least get some sort of a sub for the Yammies...

My "dream speaker" set? Emes Blacks with their Amber sub... "pricey" as well......

For you? If you don't have a clue? Head to some store(s) where you can at least see and hear a few - you just sorta' gotta'... You really can't "read" about sound...

I'd suggest you look at the new E-MU monitors. I got to listen to them at a demo at a Guitar Center and they really surprised me. Clean, clear un-hyped and way more more fuller sounding that you would expect for something their size. Much, much better than the cheap crap from KRK or M-audio. And they also have a 12 inch sub that should be shipping in June that matches up with them great. The sub is good enough to be used with any near field monitors and I am seriously considering getting one for my Genelec 1031's. The Genelec 1029's are just glorified computer speakers IMO.

I have 1029's and a sub in my small control room. I do pre mixes on them. I track through them. I mix in a room with 1031's and 8050's and have found no problems hearing the same stuff I was hearing in my room only more of it. In a small acoustic environment, the main problem is particular nodes and comb-filtering adding to the dissonance found in a small room. Small accurate nearfields at low volumes helps keep these to a minimum.

Come on Gaffster...."glorified computer speakers...." They're Genelecs!

I wish my Altec computer speakers worked that well in such a small footprint.

peace...dadogg.

+ 1 on the Yamahas. They are very neutral and matter of fact. I would upgrade a lot of other things in my budget home studio before I replaced them.

I am probably the craziest guy in here for this but I'll throw it out. I'm using the latest version of the Paradigm Monitor 3's. If they are good enough for Daniel Lanois i.e. U2, Emmy Lou Harris, Willie Nelson, etc. etc. they are good enough for me.

You're definitely not crazy. Mini-Monitors, Monitor 5's, or Monitor 3's are a very neutral and good all-around speaker. I use the older Monitor 5's in my home theater.

People might dis them because they're not pro but as you have found out that's a lot of crap. I have often thought that Wharfedale Diamond 9's would also make an excellent monitor.

Paradigms aren't only good sounding "for the money" they're just good sounding.

Daniel actually has them shown on one of his latest album covers. My set up is (2) Monitor 3's with a PDR-12 sub.

i use syrincs m3-220. it's a 2.1 system.

though they're not "pro", they are quite linear and sound really great.
i use them for mixing and "mastering" and haven't been disappointed.

and they have so much power, you could use them as a mini-pa, though i wouldn't do that, cause they are too precious to me.

very affordable (around 500$), very good and linear sounding, and f**ing loud!

i love 'em!

i just had to chime in here...
after taking a 300$ budget to gc and scoping e-mu, maudio and krk, i instead went to a top of the line (home)audio store and picked up paradigm titanv.4's not exactly "pro monitors" but very neutral w/ low distortion
i couldn't be happier
