For recording, mixing, music software, mastering, and pro sound, what magazines are all out there?

I currently read:

Mix
Sound on Sound
Keyboard Player
Recording Magazine
Computer Music Magazine

Are there any more out there that are popular?

There are a few in addition to what you mentioned.

They include:

Pro Audio Review (PAR) Lots of good equipment reviews.

EQ - now a more "Edgy" version of EM or MIX. You'll love it or hate it. THey're wisely targeting the hip hop and metal crowd these days, it seems. Their format is VERY tough to read if you're over 40 and your eyesight is going, too. Twisted Evil

Electronic Musician - highly recommened for anyone who plays and records in the modern world - it's owned by the same company as MIX - Primedia.

Tape Op - A good mag for the Analog Tape crowd and more.

Pro Sound News - mostly live sound, but there's offshoots with studio and other installations listed. Considered the industry "bible' for contractors and the like.

Related publications for theater, lighting and video:

Live Design - Mostly Broadway, London and Touring Theater staging & lighting, but often a good bit of audio information in there as well, plus it never hurts to know what they're up on in that world as well.

Studio Monthy - mostly Video and NLE stuff, but as always, there's often companion articles on movies, sound, foley/post info, plus gear lists and ads.

MediaLine - Mostly for the record label & studio owner/small replication service crowd. All kinds of stories & info on production, packaging & distribution of entertainment media.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head (and what's lying around here from this month's snail-mail.) I'm sure there's more out there.

Btw; don't be put off thinking they're too expensive to get. Here's a tip: Contact their subscription department with the name of your studio, website business or school (assuming you've got one of those) and chances are you'll get a free subscription. If you're part of some kind of established entity, you may qualify. (Most magazines don't live on the income generated from subscriptions; on the contrary, they make their $$ from advertisers. So, the more valid subscribers they can list, the more they can charge for advertising space.)

Sign up for as many free subscriptions as you can; the worst they can say is "NO". Meanwhile, you'll get a lot of great mags in the mail every month.

One last tip: Many are now offering free online/digital subscriptions will might be even cooler. No postage, no paper, and no guilt over throwing them out when you're done reading 'em.

the ones they send me for free- Tape op, mix and EM- - they were sending me remix for a while too and i never filled out the little card so they would still be sending it for free- took about 2 years of not doing it but they finally quit sending the thing- mix and EM i don't send the card in but still comes in the mail and then i say why not and put in the box- I do read them and they are in a rack in the studio bathroom for everyone to check out and enjoy- tape op I like a lot so I make sure that one email they send gets returned right awaey Very Happy
