Hi there.

I've owned a lot of AT4040's and I really really like them for a good neutral sound. I'm not sure, but I think the 3035 may be a more budget option of the same thing. There are cheaper & more xpensive AT tube mics that will give a different character to the AT4040 and that is where the comparison would begin.

The AT4040 (and maybe the at3035) are pretty neutral. They will not tend to flatter your voice in any great way...so if you already like the rap voice you are recording, and the sound of the room it's in, (and you know what you're doing of course) then there's a strong chance you will pick up a great vocal.

There is also the AT4047 which is again different and again more expensive. I had one of those but unfortunately didn't get much of a chance to record with it (I ran and ebay business last year and got a chance to try a lot of gear...but had to keep things moving! ) The reason i mention that is I've heard good things about it and vocals for rap, soul and 'the black female vocal' sound. I noticed it was certainly 'warmer' and less trebly than AT4040 thru a basic preamp like a mackie board.

Your pre is important too. don't forget that. Plenty of people here will harp on about pres Smile

Re-reading your question, scratch the AT4047 . if you want to save some bucks, then your best bet is to simply tryy them both side by side and if the AT3035 does it for you, you are laffin.

Also, the Kel HM1 could save you even more bucks. i love that little guy. i have three and they are not only cute little buggers, but they really do sound wonderful on some voices..
