Hello everyone, I was looking for opinions on the Neumann TLM49 and the M147 tube/solid state mic.

Sonically?

What Instruments did you get good results from with it?

Any cool techniques or genres it really fits into?

Anything else?

Perhaps a person who has the answers you seek has simply not sat down and read your question at this point?.......

Patience is a virtue....etc etc etc.....

Maybe so. Maybe you could 'try out' the mics you're interested in. Maybe you could find a dealer with both models. Maybe you could have been a bit nicer .

Like I said, maybe theres no one with the right answer to your question.

However, attacking the site and generalizing on the supposed level of gear ownership and quality of that gear pretty much shows you as the jackass you most likely are. There are LOTS of folks on here that have a level of gear that you can only aspire to and dream about. It shows because you're asking a question like a rookie.

If you dont KNOW what a Neumann sounds like, let alone a 'new Neumann' then you probably do need to find other sites which may or may not cater to your obviously superior level of taste and talent.

By the way....in case you dont know, everybody who posts on this site, including you, do so voluntarily. No one owes anyone an answer. Since you dont have any patience or tact, I can tell you for certain, that you have no business here in our community.

Also...If I have offended you, come on over to my forum and we'll discuss it like adults. I can tell you for certain that the moderator of this forum will lock this up really quick.

The Dog speaks the truth and knows me well...

Buttheads that show up out of the blue with an attitude, with vauge and general questions and also expect direct and compelte answers within an hour don't get much help around here. No one has lilkey answered you because most people around have learned through education from experienced and advanced users, and are now smart enough to know that mic's are like most other pro audio gear, and you need to used in your enviornment with your working style and other gear fro a period of time to see if they have any value or merit to your work.

The Nuemann mics you mention are decent mics. There are many mics being made today that are just as good if not better than those. Neither one is really up to the standards of the Nuemann mics of yester year and appear to be more of a way to market the Nuemann brand to the mass wankers rather than build the best and highest quality product they are capable of making.

Well, If nobody replied, it usually means nobody has an answer for you. Which is why I like this site.
You want more answers from 'bench racers' other sites have a lot of people jumping in that usually have an opinion on everything, but own nothing.

There was nothing wrong with Avidmusic's original question. He was hoping for replies of the sort "TLM49s are good on xx but for a yy I would prefer an M147". This type of reply, when based on experience, is helpful to the poster and to others who have not had the chance to use one or both of those mics.

Where Avidmusic went wrong was not to wait a reasonable time for replies before posting tetchy follow-ups.

Additionally, a little bit of web searching before posting the question might have brought up this comparison: http://videopark.com/neumanncomparison.htm

Wow Avidmusic!!!!

You get that pissed off over no response in just over 24 hours?!?!?!?

There are a few people on this board who have had personal experiences with those mics, but chances are................................they're busy working.......like in a session, or doing some post.

Besides, your question is rather vague. How would YOU like to use the mics.

Personally, I like the M147, but not enough to justify its purchase price. It has a decent "sheen" to it and that ubiquitous Neumann sound (thick but clear midrange with tons of detail). It's a relatively sensitive tube mic and works quite well on voice (particularly male lead vocals) and acoustic guitar. It's also a very nice kick drum mic (one of my favorites - not, IMO, as good as the SoundElux U195 for kick though).

In fact, considering its price and single polar pattern, I would think that money would be MUCH better spent on a SoundElux U195 and a Rode K2 giving you two phenomenal microphones and some money left over to buy some pizza and beer for the sessions.

As for the TLM49 - I've only had 1 short experience with it using it as a lead vocal mic for a VERY talented female jazz vocalist and on upright bass. In both applications it excelled. In fact, I have it on my short list of mics to consider buying (which will be a little bit since I just dropped $5000 on other mics within the past week!)

Based on the sound that I heard, I would gladly use the TLM49 on vocals (of all variety - perhaps with a tad bit of upper EQ boost on lead vox), rock or jazz piano, kick drum, upright bass, acoustic guitar, room mics, jazz ensemble, woodwinds, strings and more.

However, my favorite current production Neumann microphone is neither of the two which you mentioned. The TLM193 is a very versatile mic in that it's pretty darned flat overall and takes EQ well. It makes a great choice for critical recording (classical, jazz) as well as a great chameleon for other styles. I don't much care for it though on kick - I guess that's its achilles heal.

All that being said - DD and Gaff are right! This forum is a great resource for good answers - remain patient! Yes, you may get answers on *other* boards, but I would doubt their sincerity or truth. Most of the other forums are plagued with a lot of people who have NO clue about what they're talking and have even less experience. True, there are some very brilliant individuals on some of the other forums. The problem is you have to sift through a lot of sh!t to get to the occassional nugget of wisdom.

Cheers!

Jeremy

hi!
i heard both, the tlm 49 and the m147 briefly at the aes, also in concuntion with other neumanns i know (u87, tlm 103, tlm 127), and i liked the tlm 49, but i liked the m147 somewhat better. i think it justifies the higher price, it's got that tube thing going, obviously. it's a much softer sound than the u87, even silkier than the tlm 103. the tlm 49 already heads in that direction, but the m147 is right there. very nice mic. but i'd recommend both...
