just wondering, when a radio station says "now broadcasting in high definition digital" in that big bold voice, does that mean 24 bit 96 or what ?

I have talked to several station managers and program directors, and they think that this will do them in. Radio listenership is trending down. More programming equates to stations having to hyper-hyper niche market/advertise. It creates an inefficient, unprofitable business in an already tight industry.

I give HD four yawns.

I have Sirius Satellite Radio, and love it. I can honestly see radio moving in this direction for several reasons: Superior programming, You can travel without signal loss, Howard Stern is running wild without censorship, NO COMMERCIALS on music channels, you get sirius over the internet while at home, and its only 13 bucks a month. I cant wait for the merger, and to watch free FM fade into a thing of the past. People scoffed at cable TV years ago and now people gladly pay for their service, I can see this being true for the radio industry as well.

Clear Channel selling hundreds of their stations off is a good indicator of things in radio land going south.

They found out the hard way that the soccer mom is a short-attention-spanned-passive listener. But not before it was too late.

Anytime you take away the identity of the local markets, and substitute it with something else, people leave.

DIE CLEARCHANNEL.

I have never paid one dime for cable TV, I'm getting good HD broadcast off of a $25 antenna. Remember when cable came out it had NO commericals. I suspect the same will have to happen to satellite radio to keep it alive.
I like listening to local radio stations, especially when traveling. Much more flavorful.
Sat. radio sounds like MP3 to me.
HD radio.... what a hype.
1980 it was the 'Digital' hype
2007 it's the 'HD' hype

What's the next buzz word going to be?
