hello All,
Finally building my studio and also building a practice room for musicians to rent out( with drums, amps, PA, the works). problem: What in your opinions would be the best way to treat this practice room so sound doesnt leak from it. I dont need it too sound good i just need the sound to stay inside so as no to bother the surrounding offices. Absorption? decoupling of floors and walls? whats easiest? how would you go about it? all answers welcome! thanks

You didn't say what size the space is, but the best way to "sound-proof" a room is decoupling, and building a room within a room, using density to prevent transmission of sound. It'd have to be air tight as well...
There are quite a few places to read up on that topic. A search here will uncover quite a few threads, and sources as well. |

I havent yet measured the space but just think about a typical room size in a house, around 4m wide, 6m long and 6m High. it has an advantage: all around, concrete walls. the floor is ceramic tile, the ceiling is concrete. Would it be costl/ logical to decouple the entire room? say do the wallas and ceiling or would just decoupling the floor be enough? curiouse also, would treating it with rigid fiberglass inside the room and building a sound proof wall( sheetrock and silicone as explained on the soundproofing101.com website) on the other side of the concrete wall help eliminate the problem or worsen it? |

best bet is to get the drummer and bassist in there and crank it up while making measurements. find out what sound is getting out. look at any wall openings as the first thing to work on.
sound isolation is hard but you might not need much so measure first.
second, in a room like that, some basic treatments will help make it sound 1000% better - corner bass trapping, a few carpets on the floor. a drape hung on one wall to cut echos. etc |

Cheap alternative : headphones ! Or playing at low volumes and use electronic drums...
Acoustical alternative: room-in-a-room project or at least walls decoupled from the old walls. keep in mind that concrete in terms of preventing vibration from passing by is not a good material. |
