gimmie gear

I need to be flexible in my live show setup, so that I can have different mixes for various shows. So I'm thinking a piece of gear with multiple outputs like a digital mulitracker or adat would be cool. Some shows will need a full mix, others will need guitar, bass or drums muted, so that I can occasionally have a live guitarist, bassist, drumer, etc. I need to be flexible in my line-up.

Problem is, this device needs to be

A) portable - the smaller and lighter the better
B) able to sync to video somehow maybe via MTC or SMPTE to either DVD or laptop avi's?

Any ideas what would be cool for me? I hate the idea of a laptop on stage. It really scares the hell out of me. They're just so, unstable, unrugged and vulnerable to theft.

Any suggestions? Things I have considered are:

ADAT with smpte - But these are bulky. Any really small alternatives to adat nowadays? .

Digital portastudio with stereo out and 2 external sends to give me 4 outputs in all. Any good suggestions for a rugged one with MTC?

Rugged laptop, tablet or rack pc

I so wish someone made a DVD player with multiple audio outs!

What is everyone else using for multiple outs of a live backing track?

You could try having CDs with different instrument mixes pre-recorded on them and just play the one that is appropriate to the line-up on the night. That way you only need two-track.

ya mean like scarey-okie? I did that once, took the back-up track CD and got it in the line up. Worked out well enough. We were drunk.

Make two or three versions with bass, without bass. With voice without voice. I think Boswell is on to something here.

Is that what you are onto?

I need the flexibility to be able to change things. Remxing 3 versions of the backing tape every time isn't practical for me.

The Zoom H4 can take 4 tracks and mix them selectively to 2-track while playing. No option for sync though.
