I just think that Rob is not being completely honest in his presentation.
What say you Rob?

I think maybe some of the guys here are referring to your avater pic of a girl. They were hoping they were actually talking to her because 1) they troll these forums for girlfriends, or 2) they have no other social outlet...

Ahahahah... ok. That's funny. Since when do we expect people to use their own face as avatars in forums? If I have a picture of Scooby Doo as my avatar, does that then mean I look like Scooby?

That photo in my avatar is my wife. I'm also a photographer so I often use my photography works as avatars, sometimes my paintings as well (I'm also an artist).

Best thing you can do especially for the new monitors is make sure they are placed properly, and make sure your room is traeated with bass traps. I have been paying with my room non stop for the last 6 months and am still not done.

Invest in some proper stands- possibly ones that are adjustable for height, or at least understand how high your ears will be, and where they are in relation to the hieght of tweeter and ceiling. Read up on these forums in regards to speaker placement- triangle listening position, peaks and nulls, room modes, 38% listening position, etc. Between this forum and gearslutz you will find a ton of info. In regards to centering everything in the room (eg- desk placed dead center) I have read conflicting views. Somes say perfect symmetry is a no no.

And probably the last thing you want to do is spend more money, but if you really want to optimize that room, and hear everything those monitors have to offer you need to invest some time, and/or money into proper treatment, traps, etc.

Thank you, that was very helpful. Good to know that dead-center listening position is being debates--that means there's a chance I don't have to more my stuff around.

What about just using Auralex Mopads and putting the monitors on my desk? I know there's reflection off the desk, but I'll be placing them on top of another set of smaller vertical monitors, with Mopads between them, so they'll be just at the height of my ears while sitting down. What advantage does speaker stands have?

Before investing in ant of the Auraulex stuff- go to the realtraps site and check out all of the info in regards to why you need mass in a product for it to effectively absorb bass. Also check out the data charts as it has direct comparisons of each product and it's efficiency. No- I don't work for them, but I have bought a significant amount of real traps over the past 6 months.

There are also analysis tools on the site to see where your room is having issues.

Okay- I am not sure of your current work position, but I know if I was working with my monitors on my desk- even though they are near-fields they would be too close to my head for me to get a proper soundstage. I know this from my experience with my bm-5a's, and these are much smaller than the monitors you will be getting. The biggest advantage of having stands is that you will gain more flexibility in positioning them. Yes, the mo-pads help, in addition many of the stands you can by can be filled with sand, which in a way decouples the stand/monitor as well.

Also- rememeber your ear should be at same level as the tweeter in the monitor. This maybe difficult if you are placing these on top of a desk, and on top of other monitors. However maybe your seat has a height adjustment.

Realtraps have corner stands for their traps. They also have stands for their high band traps for first reflections. Instead of putting the extra bass traps in the ceiling corners you can put them along the floor leaning against the walls. It will take up some floor space but will give you extra bass trapping if you can't mount to the walls.
All this with no holes drilled.

This link will give some info on how you should set up your room.

I suppose it is a good attention grabber and it has been effective for that. With the room full of technical gear it looked like someone knew enough to read a manual or three:) so it again puzzled me.

I suspect this type of thing must happen on a regular basis around here, it is just my first encounter...anywhere!

Brien - No biggie. I'm about as un-technical as they come. Everything technical I had to learn through the school of hard knocks, simply for self-preservation (or my gear will just lay there dormant). Thank God the internet changed all that--now I can ask questions in forums and get other people advice/opinions, and it really helps a lot.

Room acoustic treatment is something that's fairly new to me, and up until just a few weeks ago, I never even thought I'd want to spend the money on such a thing--that is until I heard those audio demonstrations of before and after at Auralex's website. What a huge difference!

Speaking of Auralex, why is it that Realtraps are always mentioned, but not other places? There are so many acoustic treatment products out there by different companies. Are Realtraps considered the best, or simply because they have a presence here at this forum?

This is where I learned about them... Well where I have learned a lot of good stuff. I can tell you from experience now their product works great. I am sure the auralex product work good as well.

Ghost Acoustics seem very interesting as well. Definitely not cheap though.

Any particular brand I should steer clear of? Anyone ever used acoustic products that were total letdowns?

I'm not going to slam Ethan's stuff... or Auralex or any other manufacturer or distributor... except maybe one of the foam distributors... who is selling closed cell bedding foam as acoustic soundproofing. All of the product on the market are generally capable of of what they are touted to do. But, I will reitterate that it's up to YOU do determine the suitability of any product.

What I will say is that if you are already at all reasonably good with DIY, you CAN make out quite a bit cheaper that way.

On the other hand, if you would have to go buy tools and do this as a first and one time project... just purchase your products.

Do a search for superchunks, bass traps and diy. Bob Gold's site has good info. I'd also check out the Studio Tips forum as well as John Sayer's.

As a compromise to full on DIY, there was at one point a product called Ready Bags. These were nicely made bags ready to fill with your own 703, rock wool, etc. Then your choice of mounting and installation.

IMHO, making your own traps is the way to go, but that's just me... and I'm a lunatic who's doing a full blown DIY. But if you really want to see what DIY is all about... check out Paul Woodlocks studio build over at Studio Tips.

Just wait until you get your speakers and you should be able to tell with some analysis what is going on acoustically. Problems should be especially obvious when you determine how your new mixes translate on other systems/speakers.

Ahh, gotcha.
For that very reason I tend to ignor avatars.

Yea Foam By Mail that sells there stuff on Ebay. Ethan Winer tested there stuff in a lab and there numbers are not even close to what they claim. All they did was a copy and paste from Auralex.

Hey thats your wife? Lucky DOG!!!!!!!!!!! Very Happy

Thanks for all the comments--very helpful! I've been corresponding with realtraps and auralex, but it's kind of a slow process as it takes a while for them to get back to you when you ask a question.

Woof! Yeah, I totally lucked out. I have a ton of photography work on my website featuring the Mrs. She used to be a model/actress, so none of that "Put the camera down! I don't like having my photos taken" stuff to deal with. I had ex's like that and it was no fun at all.
