Hi all, new to the site here, hopefully this is in the right spot...

I am looking to do a similar voice effect to the one in NIN's "Starf*ckers", the one he uses over the beginning of the verses... although I am not sure how it is created.... any input is appreciated...

Thanks...

d.

kinda hard to describe...almost like a digital voice, kinda reminds me of something outta the matrix, the sound it makes when they get sucked back through the phone lines, almost like a digital decaying type thing.... I can post the song up somewhere if you need to hear it, since this description is horrible

Here's a sloppy response but in retrospect, it can make sense.
This effect is done from a mixing board pedaled into a multi-faze delay. It is actually an octive discriminator that pans down the top note to the bottom 12th. Added to this is the compressor that stutters the changes so there is no smooth transition. You may have to play with some guitar pedal effects or bass pedals to get this if you want a quick way in as opposed to an expensive vocal set-up. As long as it has a 1/4" plug, ya can make something work..lol.
Cheers

Part of the effect when the vocal first enters is that [nearly] each word is a different take; I don't believe he's singing fluid lines until 0:52. A stutter effect might be responsible for the robot sounds.

I totally agree with you on that, cause that is what I thought as well, but there is alot of other stuff happening as well...

gonna have to try and run the mic through some guitar pedals....

Thanks for the input (no pun intended), I appreciate it!!

All I can add is some input on the stutter effect.

These guys talk about it at length.
