I really like the sound of the snare. Its..... TASTY. It actually makes me hungry.
The cymbals (Ride is good) of the drums sound like playmo and the guitars lack attitude tho, The bass guitar is very un-tight. But i don't think thats your fault.

I really like your mix. Nice sounding ambient basement on the snare drum. Nice and fat. You said it didn't have vocals until now. I hate to tell you this Goldstein, you still don't have any vocals. Corned beef maybe but no vocals. Of course it's all right if you have those New York pickles to go with your bass guitar. Obviously, you know the directions to Carnegie hall and the delicatessen with the same name across the street. Wonderful! Just like your recording.

The Pastrami is good also

i like the mix. it sounds a bit unconventional but it still sounds good. only thing i'd say is add more warmth/fatness to the distortion guitar. and maybe have the kick up a bit with more high end on the kick to get that almost slap sound that you hear on the kick on pop/rock songs.

Is it just me or are there some timing issues here??


I like the tones of everything. The distortion guitar part is buried way way too much.. I dont think getting it 'darker' is going to bring it out.

The drums are very 'garage/basement'...not a bad thing and bringing everything else into focus around this unusual sounding kit could put you on to something different.

If you are trying for 'slick/produced' you're on the wrong track......Go with what you do best. Theres no rules...except for the RULE 1.

I thought the heavy guitars and the bass were sharing
alot of the same freqs. and were really run together.. Might want to try and eq more mids into the guitars around 1k
and get them away from the center of the mix.... but good over all

I guess the distortion guitar could use doubling side to side
thereby opening up some space for the bass

The recording was done in a basement, no overdubs, just the best take
6 tracks: 2 OH (mk012), BD (beta52A), SD (MD421N), Bass(DI), Guitar (421-II)

What if on the clean guitar parts you patched in a delay unit?? I hear that guitar part screaming out delay. Maybe even rerecord the part again to perfect the timing issues, your almost there!! Either way a delay effect on it might make the guitar part integrate its groove better, w/ a good delay setting. I tend to overdue delay tho, I need stop, I am a delay junkie.
The chorus guitars are way too focused on the low end as was stated already. But I would also consider the amp setup too.
Also, are u using a marshall half stack? What type of setup u have?

I'm just a recording enthousiast (not a fulltime pro)
And the band was looking for a decent demo
They're young and fun
So I did one for free

The guitarist has some Line6 Amp and Cab 4x12
Don't know for sure

I'm considering re-recording it all
Need to think about that one

well make sure you get the guitar player to change his settings.. record the heavy guitars twice and get the scoop out of it. all lows and highs wont set well at all

Yup, you have increased the bass drum. But notice, it's still kind of flabby and nondescript. Not punchy nor hard-driving. What to do? Simple. Have a Heineken and do this one single solitary thing, invert the phase of the bass drum. Don't do this to anything else! What will this get you? Oh baby! Well it won't get you a beautiful woman like myself however, you'll get a more solid, um much more solid, um...bass drum sound. This is where phasing aberrations aren't problems. You don't need nor want any stinkin' flabby bass drum. You need cancellation and I'm not talking bad sitcoms here. This is easily accomplished in software or with the simple push of a button on a console that has that funny looking little zero with the line through it. Sort of like a no smoking sign or a do not enter sign. But you will enter into a new realm of mixing rock-and-roll drums, in the zone, zone!

Phase flippy broad in the zone.
