Im probably asking a retarded question but please just humor me anyways.
I may understand quite a bit about sound and all that but setting up gear is a mystery to me. My curiousity has come up with this question:
How do you chain a bunch of high quality 2 input pre amps into your DAW so you end up with like 8 or more like a firepod? Can you just run like 8 2 channel preamps into each xlr input on a firepod?
I dont know why this confuses me so much...
My stomache hurts thinking about this stuff... |

If the DAW's A/D accepts line level sources, then yes, of course.
It's no different than having a mixer's direct outs (or record outs) plugged into the inputs of the converter. |

Any converter that accepts line (or mic) level inputs for use with a DAW.
The Firepod that you mentioned does.
Computers don't understand analog signals, they operate on ones and zeros.
Any rackmount, desktop, or portable device that routes an analog signal into a computer is a converter (more precisely, an Analog to Digital converter).
The ones that do the opposite (run signal out of the DAW) are Digital to Analog converters. |

Oh that makes sense, duh....
So it's safe to safe that preamps such as firepods, toneports and all that are essentially converters? What if I took a firepod and ran it into another firepod and then into my DAW? |

Firepods and I assume Toneports are preamps and converters rolled into one. Hooking one up to the other won't do anything for you. |

No. The firepod is a converter. |

You can daisy chain up to three maximum of them, which will triple your available channels. |

Loop the firewire output to the input of the next firepod, then out of that one into the next, and finally, out of that one and into the CPU. |
