I'll try to contribute to this expansion of Aural Altitudes.

I've actually have been considering mounting numerous ego-video cameras in and around the remote truck control room. I could then present a multi-camera video shoot of a typical recording and/or mixing session. A lot of it's going to be boring however, as we all know. But for those of us whose mouths are always running, descriptive freeform thought processes verbalized and then physically realized audibly, could be interesting for some folks? This would have to use a secondary audio program Channel for the control room banter and/or subtitles. And a healthy wideband stereo track to be able to listen to the revolving project.

This Tuesday, the truck is moving to Germantown Maryland for a week's worth of overdubs and mixing. Let me see what I can toss together for demonstration purposes? This is an old hybrid truck utilizing mostly vintage analogue preamps, equalizers, console, dynamics processing, old Digital reverbs. Recording to popular digital formats like HD 24xr & Pro Tools, tossing stuff back and forth. I'll try and pick up a couple more of those 7-11 cameras for 50 bucks apiece? Anything I do can and will be used against me a court of law.

We already have a "Reviews" section here. Over the past years, it has seemingly become more and more buried. There was a time when it was prominently displayed on "The Forums" header. Nowadays, you have to know that it exists, and go to "Content"...Maybe it's time you brought iit back to life with a dedicated moderator again...?
As for showcasing and videos, etc., we had the photos, and they were pulled by IT management, citing that the site did not have the server "horsepower" to support that. Has this problem been rectified?

Isn't this what You Tube and My Space is all about? We can throw the links up on Recording.org and maybe even include some kind of Recording.org graphic? Like the one that appears in my upper left-hand corner (which I've already stolen, thank you Chris) of my browser window? It would be brought to you by "me" and " sponsored by Recording.org"?

Never mind that I spent the first 3 days at the AES and never ran into a single Recording.org person. Someone tore down my meetings announcement on the bulletin board there. We'll see what happens in 2009 at the AES, after television has gone completely digital.

One thing that I would like to see is a bit more in-depth industry news... and not gear press releases.

Maybe some news from AES and even RIAA. I would especially be interested in legislation news that I don't always hear about until too late... Broadcast, Cable, Satellite, Audio, Live, etc...

Actually, the truck is going to Clarksburg Maryland later today. But before I go, I'm stopping at Micro Center and picking up a couple more disk drives and 2, single chip, CMOS miniature surveillance cameras to go with my other one. I have 3 standalone DVD recorders in the truck/control room to go with the Sony HDR-HC3 high-definition camcorder with ultra wide-angle lens adapter. Haven't quite figured out where the best camera mounting positions are yet to give people a proper working view of a control room with visible detail? I really can't have somebody bouncing around the control room with a camera constantly. No room and too much distraction. I also don't like bright lights nor infrared mode. So this will be challenging.

I'm still going to have to devote a fair amount of time to trying to edit a 3 and/or 4 points of view shot production. Sure, I might end up making it mostly a quad split? With a couple of occasional close-up's full-screen, along with my continuous verbal banter. And instead of actually editing and/or telescoping, I may just throw those sections into comical high-speed mode? The time lapse like comedy will also help people to understand just how lengthy this process can be. Only slowing down for significant cumulative examples. Remember, this is only in the smoking and drinking phase. I guess those sections, I'll have to edit out. Otherwise, people will know my secret.

Secrets? Me?

My vote would be for more features, perhaps an area featuring works in progress, new releases, etc. Also, the ability to put up pictures would be nice. (I'm still clueless as to how to put up a pic here....never quite figured it out, really.) Maybe a size limitation to keep it sane and manageable?

Not so sure about product reviews, might be best to leave that for the pro audio magazines and such. It's tough enough keeping it honest, accurate and objective when doing this stuff, and I could see it easily become corrupted without someone handling it full time, talking with the manufacturers, fact-checking, etc. If you DO create a review forum, perhaps a disclaimer up front would do the trick: These are informal reviews of gear we LIKE, based on personal opinions, private purchases, word of mouth, etc. No endorsement implied or stated, yada yada yada.

All in all, this is still a GREAT place to hang out, read the posts, and pass on any advice we can.

And of course, my never-ending, pet-peeve request still remains unfulfilled: MANDATORY profiles for anyone who posts or creates an account.

Yes...well, it's more or less defunct. I won't bring Chris and my personal conversations into the mix, but since I was the editor and had about a dozen review samples coming in to ramp the reviews back up (and have subsequently called them all off) I feel remiss to state that it doesn't look like that will be coming back any time soon.

However, on a related note, I will likely be providing reviews for one of the major pro-audio/music retailers here in the very near future instead. I pitched the idea to them and they like it so far.

Yeah...no kidding. I mean, what would it spotlight?
