Questions about Cubase 4

Hey all,
I'm a long time Sonar user (on 7 PE now), and it has been great..
but I'm considering switching over to Cubase 4.

To my ears Cubase has a better stereo field, more depth and it seems to handle everything with more grace.. anyone else notice this?

I have an offer to buy Cubase used... is this a problem for registration or activation?
It comes with everything (usb key, book, etc.etc.), great price$!

Also, does Cubase let you have per-project folders like Sonar does?

Any feedback, gotcha's are welcomed.

I use Cubase (SX2 to be precise). Steinberg allows for transfer of registrations and I believe there is a nominal charge, like $35, at the time of the transfer. You can probably find out more information over at their website http://www.steinberg.de/24_0.html (if you can't read German remember to click the "English" button on the upper right hand side).

I actually purchased my software copy used years back and the person I bought it from took care of the transfer.

The sound quality is going to be the same if using the same plugins and pan law.

I agree with you that Cubase's interface is better but having said that, I grew up on Cubase since VST 3.5 so I have a bias. Sonar is too cramped and muddled imho but I do admire the great fx they bundled in 6 and 7PE.

The licenses can be transferred by contacting the distributor which is Yamaha in the USA. If the person transferring the license lives outside of the USA you will have to pay an additional fee to have your product registered as USA product.

Certainly. You can also save a project to a new folder if desired, copying any audio with it. You can set the record folder anywhere you want (it defaults to the Audio folder in the project folder you setup).

As someone with no previous background with cubase/sonar in particular(I used some freeware stuff.. horrible!), I'd recommend the switch to cubase. I'm using sx3, and Have tried sonar 7 at a friend, and cubase 3 seems way cleaner, organization oriented, and more professional. The project file pool commands are great, maintaining a clean and organized workspace folder.
And in general, the interface is flawless, customizable, and... Clean!

I'd definitely switch Smile
