I've been messing around with trying to use Sennheiser 800 mics to record a prepared santur up very close. The cardioid pattern sounds interesting with these mics but the overall sound quality is too hyped up for this application. So what I ended up doing was to use the bass and sensitivity pads on the mics attenuated 12 db, but also wrapping the grills in layers of cotten fabric, untill they sounded like very different microphones, smooth and dark sounding, more "natural" sounding than using EQ to roll off the higher frequencies. |

Whatever works.
It is the "sound" that you are look for and if you have to mod a microphone to get that sound (and it does not involve sawing, cutting or blow torches <GRIN>) I think anything is valid.
Best of luck! |

a couple of years ago I recorded a blow torch for a electro acoustical project... fortunately I opted for a pair of budget Studio Projects B1 mikes because the composer, who was wielding the torch, set the mikes on fire... He was delighted when he heard the result, and gladly paid for replacement mikes...

Imagine how they'd have gone up if they had cloth wrapped around their screen...can you say "tikki torches"? |

I want to sample my barber as he has a great rhythm with his scissors. |
