Well I guess I looked at it this way , Im not going to offer Home improvment services and design , if I dont know alll the in and outs of home improvement.
Iannis original question left me with the feeling that he was in over his head and was looking for a (help me save my ass) answer. Now , after reading his second post, it was more of a indecsion of what console to use,
which I felt he already knew the answer .. |

I've never used one to control PT (I think they do), but if you are looking for quality Yamaha's up there running with the big dogs. I've never been disappointed with their products.

Great stuff Bent, ...Thanks! |

well, We've discussed AMEK before and in addition to their 40 input BIG console , they also made a smaller 24input version.
Good quality and can be found used from time to time for under 8k
You might want to ck out www.soundbroker.com/ for such things. |

Hello Iani;
There are basically 3 types. 1)Analog Mixers and 2) Digital Mixers. and 3) a new breed of analog mixers that have USB and Firewire interfaces added.
Is a mixer even necessary for your rig? Maybe not--given that you are doing your mixes in the digital domain of your computer with a professional sequencer like Logic or Sonar, Cubase, Nuendo or Digital Performer or Pro Tools LE. If you have a multi input audio interface, it is easy to simply connect your sources to the interface and your outputs to a monitoring system. The audio interface does all the functions of a soundcard, but adds more inputs and outputs.
Even many professionals are mixerless now. With a control surface like Mackie Control you can have a hardware mixer-like surface to control all the leveling and effecting you do in the software's mixer.

I use the mixerless methed in a way. I use my mixer for an interface
the pv 20 see here

I just jump the inserts direct to my Motu 828 interface / soundcard
http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/828
the motu comes with a digitar mixer on your screen so now you never have to worry about dirty scratchy controls
I guess i'm a mouse jocky as I havent had success in using the Active Controller Technology (ACT) in my sonar software.
guess I need the right controler, LOL. I would recomend that you check out everyones studio, (pictures on line) and copy a system that works
heres my humble home studio.

Good luck with your choices and let us know how it turns out.

Happy holidays guys.
For me the Onyx thing was the only advice "below par". Guys, this is a long term project, we will start with a Tascam just to get something workable, and then - in a year or so - we will have more funding coming in at which point I will need to have enough knowledge to make well informed choices.
This forum has been useful for me in the past and I believe it will always be so, but of course it will not replace having to go out and see all the stuff and talk with the experts live.
Plus gear is important but only when combined with highly motivated and qualified humans and the right mix of passion for creativity.
Love to all then
Good holidays - again.

what is your price range and what are your trying to record? hiphop or bands? home studio or commercial? hobby or occupation? even though I know i can mix within protools I still choose to have a nice mixing console for more inputs,fx so its less on the cpu, converters in and out plus the look of a nice studio. Now thats just me.personal recording you might not need a board but a nice small control surface for your DAW. Now as a business, your clients will pay more for quality and looks. I just bought the tascam dm4800 and it sounds and looks amazing in my studio. im very happy. hope this helps |
