We do lots of Broadway-esque shows.

The two most prevalent in our stock: Countryman E6 (over the ear) and B6 (Standard lav).

The new DPA and/or Sanken's as they have the smallest profile and cabling. The Sanken is even available as a cardioid type in a very small form factor. Frequently, these microphones are placed on top of the head just behind the front of the hairline. Spirit gum holds them in place. The Sennheiser's mke2 capsule is also very small and easy to deal with with no sharp metal parts. They all are available with or without the electronics body that contains the XLR and battery compartments for connection to wireless transmitters. Countrymen & ISOMAX also makes some excellent flat rectangular profile capsules that also sound quite nice.

Little Mike's. Big sound.

All of these sub-miniature, small capsule condenser microphones are available with and without their respective electronics to be used with or without standard XLR input applications or just the microphone capsule with wire, to be connected to a wireless transmitter pack.

If you purchase a wireless microphone system they usually include some kind of awful tie clasp style microphone. Most of those are awful and so we normally will purchase whatever brand of miniature microphone we want to connect to whatever wireless transmitter pack that is part of the wireless system that we have in use be it Shure, Sennheiser, Lectrosonics or even Azden & Audio Technica.

Now remember, these are quality devices and are not cheap. These are high-quality studio devices not Taiwanese crap. Countrymen microphones are just that. Microphones. They don't make wireless systems. You can purchase wireless systems and request particular brands of microphones for an increased fee. So if you're going to purchase a wireless mike system with transmitter, receiver and microphones, you might want to consider asking for something better than what is supplied with it initially? Believe me, it's worth the extra cost if you care about quality sound to go with your pictures.

Conversely, if you're shooting with a $500 camcorder, then a $.98 microphone might just be the ticket?

I'm not cheap but I'm easy
