Bigtree -

Have you thought of having a "Technical Corner" forum? This would be where folks could go for help on things they might be a bit hazy on, like for example input impedance, optical cable protocols, phantom powering, noise figures and interconnection standards.

I've seen (and answered many) posts in the other forums that haven't really fitted there because the underlying problem has been that of understanding the engineering rather than a problem with the particular piece of gear.

This site is such a great resource for old hands and new hands alike that it would be good to expand its range. Thanks to the participants and the mods it's also mercifully free of the flaming and ego pumping so prominent in other audio sites.

Just a thought.

you can ask thoughs questions in many of the existing forums

if it's a question close to a piece of gear then Pro Audio Gear
if it's a general studio or even patch wiring then Recording Studio will be fine

or a conceptual audio sort of thing then parhaps Pro Sound Chat

long ago we had a tech section but things got screwy and it found a new home

just ask your question and I'm sure an answer will come

I really like the idea of an Engineers showcase.
List of gear, services and rates with links to a few examples. And a chance for people to leave public feedback.
Sort of like Hot or Not but less TnA.

OK something came to my mind a while ago, possibly last night :S.

What about a wiki?
A forum I was on years ago, they added a wiki (as the homepage, with a link to the forums).

We could have definitions of types of gear, examples of how to use it, add pictures/video clips etc.
Obviously though, this requires a lot of input work to get it set up. IIRC the forum I was on spent time building it up, then moved it to the front page.

Maybe we could even trawl the forums for the best bits (the compressor thread should be a goldmine for prewritten magic) - or we could provide a brief description then link to the forum topics for "further discussion".

Is this possible, beneficial, or completely preposterous?

[Example: Compressor]
A compressor is a form of audio processing device, available commonly in hardware/outboard and software forms. It's purpose is to reduce the volume of the louder parts of a signal, levelling them with the quieter parts. It also resembles a Limiter, and Noise Gate/Expander.

I would love to see a review forum or section. If anyone knows where a good unbiased pro audio gear review website is let me know. Even if it was a retailer, if they did it like newegg does with computer supplies it would be great I.E. ratings and comments about individual products.

A great section for reviews would have a post count limiting on posting a new review and a post count limiting commenting on it. That way you could weed out some of the spam. Say you would need 200 or 500 or whatever to post the initial review and 100 to comment on it. Then you could have an automatic vote on the thread rating the product or product line. You could even have a moderator approve or deny any thread if it interferes with any of the sponsors or is not written well/clear enough.

This entire forum is a great resource for reviews but finding individual products becomes hard.

Love it, but who has the time to do either?
I did 10 years ago, but now...

Both of your ideas (wiki, reviews) would be beneficial, but obviously would take someone a good bit of time to design and implement...

"finding individual products becomes hard."
Except for SM57s, and Firepods. They get mentioned every 5 minutes.

Or a mandatory "Read This Page" and you are required to quote an arbitrary word from it to get your questions answered until your post count gets high enough.

This is why I suggested a wiki - several pages containing basic ideas/concepts to try and catch some of the completely misguided.

Even just a dedicated board full of threads solely about concepts - one per thread. Someone posts the topic header, and then some thoughts are added until eventually it's compiled back into the original post.
