I just finished this song and I'd like to hear what everybody thinks. I posted the instrumental a little while ago and this is the final version.

BTW, for some reason some of the songs that I've uploaded onto my soundclick sound slowed down when I listen to the "Hi-Fi" version, which sucks. However, on certain computers they sound normal.. weird. So I apologize if it sounds like it's being played back at half speed.
Thanks! |

I didn't have any playback issues.
Sounds good. I think the vocals blend well and all the instruments sound solid. I didn't get the best listen, really. It's 5:30 and I can't really crank up these JBL's in an apartment! But, hey, maybe a little bit of feedback is better than none. |

Definitely a solid mix, the vox at the beginning may be a little too forward. Maybe some volume automation or something along those lines could help create some intensity when the song kicks it into higher gear? Drum sounds and guitar sounds (specifically in the choruses) are slick!. There is some strange guitar stuff at about 0:28. Sounds like some major phase cancellation. Maybe that was what you were after? |

Yeah I noticed that and it was a big mistake on my part. All the guitars were recorded with one mic and that particular part (0:2 wasn't doubled. I basically copied the same track and slightly moved it to give it some separation, and then panned them. I did the same for the "pre chorus" part (0:50), and it worked. I think the problem was that I moved the copied track too little. |

That's tricky business, doubling a track like that. What I like to do is move the copied track till it's completely 180* out of phase,(and all sound pretty much disappears) then start moving it a little more till it starts to sound natural. Of course, I don't think it's ever going to sound completely natural. This is something I'm still learning myself.
I feel what Scort said. You have a very dynamic vocalist. There's probably several ways to address your problem. I'm no mixing expert, so I won't try to tell you how to fix it. I imagine you had to use a certain amount of compression (unless you were riding the levels during the performance??) So maybe just a little less compression and like scort said some volume automation would make the dynamics of the recording more true to the performance.
Good luck and post and new mixes if you can. |
