Hey guys, this is my first time posting in this section. I just did a semi-rough mix of a demo by my band entitled "Number Two". It was tracked live with 7 tracks total:

Kick, snare (sm57), 2 OH's, 2 guitar cabs, and a bass cab. All of this was going through a mackie 1604 into a MOTU 828mkII into DP 5.1.

I know my room isn't ideal because when I mixed an earlier song, it lacked the low end punch. I knew my room was giving me more bass than was actually there so I loaded this one up a bit more. When left my studio and played it in my room, it was too bassy, so be forewarned, i guess. Then again maybe it's my other room that sounds too bassy. In any case I need more acoustic treatment STAT.

Any constructive comments at all are welcome.

Thanks

Track: Number Two

hey, i enjoyed the tracks. just a few things that came to mind.

i'm guessing there are three or four gtr's. pan them so they each have there own space. start from a hard left or right and bring them in.

one of the gtr's is fighting with the bass freq. set the eq oppisite,s if you boost on one cut the other at the same freq.

you have nice drum tracks.

Thanks for the reply.

There are indeed 4 guitar tracks (2 rhythm, 2 lead) and I did notice the bass and rhythm guitar fighting with each other muddying up the mid-low frequencies. They are currently panned as you mentioned, but probably not enough. IIRC, something like <18 and 18>. I'll pan the rhythm guitars out more and see what I get. They're also EQ'ed oppositely.

thanks for the compliments on the drum tracks. I'm the drummer! Very Happy

More comments are welcome!

Joe

Yeah, I'd try panning them out pretty hard and seeing if that gets them out of each other's way. As well, if you leave the bass dead centre and push the rhythm guitar's out that might help to separate the two.

Really nice job. What did you use for the kick mic?

I'll definitely move the rhythm guitars out a bit more to separate them from the bass which is currently sitting dead center in the mix. The lead guitars are currently panned out farther than the rhythm guitars. Do you think It'd be a good idea to move the leads in more while moving the rhythms out? I would think the lead guitars (primary melody and solos) would be less likely to step on the bass frequencies.

thank you! Smile the kick drum mic is actually a Nady DM80. It came as a part of the Nady DMK7 pack I got for Christmas when I was about 14. I would be embarrassed to say so but you know, they aren't bad mics. I placed the DM80 inside the drum, about 3-4 inches from the batter head pointed straight at the beater. I would have used my AKG D112, but it crackles and I think the capsule is dying. Sad

The only thing I'm a bit disappointed with is the tom sound. I don't have a good LDC otherwise I would have probably put that behind the kit over my shoulder (watching for phase issues of course) to capture some better tom tone. The OH's were Nady CM88 SDC's (cymbal mics) in X/Y.

thanks for the kind words!
