(I yanked this from Pro Gear)
OK,
Here's the unfinished piece we're workin' on - "Forever Your Way" by the current incarnation of The Green Goblyn Project (currently Xtian & me).
LINK
This is rough, no FX outside of a hall verb with I think a 2.6 second tail.
No EQ, a little compression, a lot of beer.
Mics used: 414, 81, 103, 57, 4033.
Preamps used: Vipre, Octopre, Crest HP8 (Console).
Don't expect too much from this, it's an EZ listening one, drums as an afterthought...
Enjoy! |

Haven't listened to it but I like the sound of the beer. |

Link looked dead to me, I'll try again in an hour or so... |

I really like the song . Mix it and post a link. Drums - yes, please - just cymbals (brushes) and kick (felt beater). |

Yeah man...that's good. Nice and thick.
What were you using the Vipre and Octopre on?
Thanks. |

Really like the song. It has real potential. I'd like to hear more of the drums just to evaluate the mic/pre combinations, but I'd also like to hear more of the fills in the mix. |

Was 6am and I was done in when I posted the thing about the beer. Online gaming, eh...
Having now listened to it, I like. Real nice mellow song. Nice reverb, on the whole. |

Wow, thanks guys!
Yet again I honestly didn't think there would be such a rush!
Almost makes me want to move on to the next song and call this one done...
Almost...
I'll write more in a few hours when I'm not so tired from working a double.
Glad y'all like it! |

OK, here's the skinny, near as I can recall (almost a week ago, gimme a break!):
Guitar track:
414 3 or 4 inches off the neck, omni, flat, 0dB, through the Vipre, panned hard left.
Vipre settings: Lo cut, Input 600Ω, riding on the edge of (and hitting) clip.
4033 6 or so inches from the soundhole, through the Octopre, panned hard left.
Octopre settings: Just under clip, dynamics off, HPF off.
TLM103 in the left corner of the room near the door, in front of the other mics a few feet, run straight through the board, panned hard right.
Board settings: No EQ, HPF off, gain just over unity, pad out. This one was cranked so hot that it would take off if I soloed it.
Drums (that you barely hear, cuz that's what the song wants... So far):
414 on straight stand a few feet away from and just off centerline of kit, through Vipre.
Vipre settings: Input 300Ω, riding on the edge of (and hitting) clip (yep, there's a pattern here).
SM81 on mini boom, Flat, -10dB, aimed haphazardly toward kik about 4 feet away, run through Octopre, same settings as 4033 above.
The drums consist of the following:
Take one = Floor Tom and Kik
Take two = Ride and Crash
Take three = Rolls on the Floor Tom
Vocals:
All vox recorded with 414, mic at angle down and to left of Xtian's mouth, omni, 0dB, HPF on, through Vipre. Again the pattern - hitting just into clip. Impedence varies with flavor (i.e. I don't remember where I had switched the impedance setting at on which vocal track, I really gotta remember to take notes!)
On the lead tracks of vox he's alone in the booth, on the third his girlfriend and I are in the iso with him, saying random things, singing along, jingling keys, etc.
Oh, the shaker was recorded immediately following the drums with the same setup - gain changed to really slam that one into the box.
Also, there's a 57 in there somewhere with the scratch guitar - the track you can hear the breathing on at the beginning is the one (it was there for the scratch tracks (vox,etc...))
Seriously, I'm glad you guys dig it - I'm flattered!
We'll be adding more parts on Wednesday; if I get a final mix together I'll repost it in the Critique section so y'all can rip holes in it to your hearts content! |
