I really like the vocals in Avenged Sevenfold. I would like to get that nice edgy smokers voice in some of my recordings. Is this just a smokers voice or do they use a lot of compression. I watched some of their clips on youtube and noticed that his voice in the video didn't sound as thick as it does in the recordings. Its like there somekind plugin that adds harmonics or something. If its a plugin, I would like to know which one.
Check out this clip to see what I mean.

Check out this youtube.
I'm not a big fan of screamer stuff but I have to admit there stuff has some serious skill behind it and is tastefully done with a very commercial feel. |

I'm thinking that in the studio the preamps are just pushing into clip - not clipping per se, but just getting into that red zone.
Nothing I've heard on the 'Tube or the radio sounds to me like they're putting a distortion plug or anything on his lead vox tracks, though there are some on certain BG Vox, doubles and what-not.
A good pre can run right on the edge of (and into) clip, and is often designed to do so - thereby adding an extra amount of thickness and depth without the god-awful trashy cheap distorted sound of a Mackie or Beh****er when they go over the limit. |

BTW, you need to update the bio on your site.
I suggest taking off the current ages and DOB of band members...

Oh? Mackie preamps in clip = teh suck?
Didn't know that one. Is it all cheapass pres that do that or just Behringer (the 1337 cheapass) and Mackie's particular design? |

Hey thanks for the website tip. Your right, I think when my boys were younger, this was a selling feature but our music is changing from family oriented stuff to more heavier rock. The kids ages just doesn't cut it anymore. I will try to update this , this week. I've already had this mentioned a few times now. Maybe its time I listen.
As far as preamps goes , I am actually exploring a few models. I was thinking possibly a Chameleon or a ADK ap1. Any suggestions on a preamp that has that Red Zone cutting sound. Again, I'm just a small studio but I figure I am at that stage where I need to seriously move to the next phase.
Your right about the Behringer tube preamp. I have one and its not great. I changed the tubes on it and it helped a little. They really put cheap tubes in there. |

My Scottish friend:
Cheap-ass pre's suck when they clip.
I might be able to give you an A/B comparison tonight if there's nothing booked at RC.
I'll run the Vipre and the Octopre full on into clip alongside the onboard Crest HP-8's pre's and post the results.
Then, you can be the judge...
Rick:
Glad I could help!
I hope I didn't come off as condescending, I do think that your site is much more professional looking now without the DOB info!
And kudos to you, I hope my young ones are as hip as yours appear to be when they reach that age!
My youngest already is showing interest in guitars and classic rock (he's almost two!)...

Looking forward to hearing the results. I just want something that will keep my boys happy. Justin is actually working on his own cd for a high school project.
You can check out one of his tunes here.

We are trying to get more that A7X sound in the mix on the vocals.
And no not condescending at all. Its other opinions that keeps me in check of who I am as a person.
I figure my wife may not always be right so I rely on others to validate my flaws, lol. |

Well bent I hate to say it but I won't notice the difference. Feel free to ram your samples (if you do them) into 64kbps MP3, I won't notice. My cans are still plugged into a 3.5mm jack on the side of my computer speakers.
NB: I accept no liability for mental breakdowns caused by this fine example of how not to monitor. |

Nah, I bet you will!
I bet you will say that the clipped Vipre sounds better than the clipped Crest, if not the Octopre...
Trust me...
